Purpose of Position
The Software Engineer supports the development, integration, configuration, and sustainment of computer hardware and software used in FlightSafety’s simulation products. This role develops skills across production support, simulation computer systems, operating systems, cybersecurity hardening, build environments, and integration of simulation software and hardware.
Tasks and Responsibilities

Operating Systems & Configuration Management

  • Administer and maintain multiple operating systems across simulator platforms, including sensitive military systems.
  • Set up and maintain software file structures for assigned projects.
  • Manage configuration control and source code repositories; perform software builds, packaging, and installations.
  • Analyze software and OS patching status; perform cybersecurity hardening, remediation, STIGs, and risk mitigation.

Simulation Software & Hardware Integration

  • Support implementation of device drivers and hardware interface software.
  • Maintain mathematical libraries, system utilities, and debugging packages with guidance.
  • Evaluate new hardware/software for production and development systems.
  • Maintain consistency, quality, and reliability of simulation software on all supported platforms.

Engineering Support & Collaboration

  • Assist software developers and applications engineers in debugging and troubleshooting simulation software.
  • Review and utilize OS and simulation logs to support integrated system behavior.
  • Work closely with hardware engineers and team members to ensure seamless system integration.

Documentation & Training Support

  • Assist in documenting policies, procedures, troubleshooting guides, and workflow documentation.
  • Support development of training materials for internal use and technician training.

R&D and Prototype Development

  • Contribute to prototype development of new technologies, software structures, tools, and algorithms.
  • Support engineering tool development and continuous improvement initiatives.

Other Requirements

  • Travel, shift work, and special hours may be required.
  • Maintain compliance with export control and security requirements.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and professional conduct in all assigned tasks.
  • Maintain regular attendance and work safely in a constant state of alertness.

Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another applicable technical field.At least 2 years of related software engineering experience, preferably involving simulation systems or real‑time environments.Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.Internal progressive experience may qualify when an employee demonstrates the ability to perform the responsibilities of the role.C++ competency preferred.
Minimum Experience

2+ years of related experience in software engineering preferred.

    • Fortran 90, C, C++
    • Shell scripting languages (Bash, PowerShell, Perl)
    • Basic Python for automation and tooling

    Operating Systems

    • Unix/Linux (workstation and server)
    • Windows (workstation and server)
    • Experience with patching, STIGs, and OS hardening
    • Comfortable working across multiple OS platforms simultaneously

    Software Tools

    • MS Visual Studio
    • Source control systems (Visual SourceSafe, Team Foundation Services, Git)
    • MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
    • Text editors (Emacs, VI)
    • Configuration management and build automation tools

    Simulation & Systems Tools

    • Familiarity with simulation logging, hardware interface software, and device drivers
    • Exposure to mathematical support libraries, system utilities, and debugging packages
    • Ability to review and interpret simulation logs
    • Experience supporting simulation software developers and applications engineers

    Systems & Hardware

    • PC hardware, servers, and networking components
    • Understanding of hardware/software interfaces
    • Ability to evaluate and integrate hardware/software for production simulation systems

    Cybersecurity

    • OS patching, vulnerability mitigation, and compliance tracking

    • Understanding of secure development and secure configuration principles
