What does a volunteer manager do?

A volunteer manager works with an organization to coordinate volunteer recruitment and activities. As a volunteer manager, your job duties involve finding ways to best use the skills and experience of volunteer staff within your organization. If they need additional skills or are new to the team, you are responsible for their orientation and training. Qualifications for this career vary depending on the type and size of the organization you work for. Most employers prefer or require candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in administration, management, human resources, or a related field. Familiarity with the organization’s mission and operations is also beneficial when starting out.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer manager, and why are they important?

Familiarity with volunteer management software, event planning tools, and sometimes certification in volunteer administration is beneficial. Excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills set exceptional Volunteer Managers apart. These abilities are crucial for effectively coordinating volunteers, fostering engagement, and ensuring program success.
