Volunteers in computer-related roles often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying levels of technical resources, collaborating with team members who have diverse skill sets, and managing time effectively with limited supervision. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to communicate proactively, seek clarification when needed, and utilize available training materials or documentation. Additionally, being open to learning and flexible with changing project requirements can contribute to a positive and productive volunteer experience.

Strong communication, reliability, and teamwork skills set standout volunteers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate data handling, effective project support, and smooth collaboration with staff and other volunteers.

What are Volunteer Computers?

Volunteer computers are personal computers or servers contributed by individuals or organizations to help with distributed computing projects, typically for scientific research or humanitarian purposes. These computers run specialized software that allows them to process data during idle times, contributing their computing power to large-scale projects like SETI@home or Folding@home. Volunteers can participate from anywhere in the world, and their contributions collectively solve problems faster than single supercomputers. This approach leverages the power of many computers working together to tackle complex tasks that require significant computational resources.

Job description

Looking for a fun and flexible place to volunteer? The Southwest Lending Closet is looking for you. We lend durable medical equipment free for up to 90 days to anyone who needs it, anywhere in the Phoenix metro area. We're the only company of its kind in the metro, and we're completely run by volunteers - we have no paid staff. We've been doing this work since May of 2000, and continuously growing. Every year, we serve over 5,000 clients, and loan over 15,000 pieces of equipment. We are very very busy!

As a volunteer, you'll check equipment in and out using a computer, while working with 2-3 co-volunteers, all doing the same job. You'll work with lots of nice people. We're known as a great place to volunteer. We're open 6 days a week, 3 hours a day. Once you're trained, we ask you to work a minimum of 2 complete shifts a month - more if you want. The schedule is completely flexible, and you're in control of when you work. It can be different every week or every month. Flexibility is our middle name! We are a very busy office, and as a volunteer, you'll be very busy as well - interacting with clients, moving equipment around, and using a computer. If you're looking for a sedentary position, this isn't it. We're looking for folks who love to be busy.

Volunteer training occurs one-on-one over the course of two 3-hour sessions, mainly training the use of our computer system for checking equipment out and back in. Prior to training, we ask that you view a list of YouTube videos related to our equipment, its set-up and its use. Once you're trained, the schedule is available to you to sign up. Please note that this position requires volunteers to lift equipment that weighs up to about 20 pounds, such as wheelchairs, out of tight spaces, so you must have some physical capability.

Note: We are currently not able to accept volunteers seeking court-ordered community service hours.

As mentioned, we are a very busy place. You'll likely help clients back-to-back during your 3-hour shift. I promise you won't be bored. Come serve with us!
