Job Summary:

This Intern position is for college students interested in pursuing a professional career with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
This program gives civil engineering, construction management and similar majors the opportunity to gain practical experience as an intern in a variety of technical areas including highway and bridge construction projects, material testing, construction survey, and bridge, roadway, or traffic design.
The type of work interns perform depends on the needs of the Department and may vary according to the Groups or Districts to which they are assigned.

Job Duties:

Learns how to inspect items of work on highway construction projects; learns how to inspect contractor's traffic control; learns techniques to ensure work is in compliance with applicable standards, specifications, and ensures public safety. Learns how to use specialized internal software and Google applications on a laptop computer to prepare correspondence, document observations, measurements, temperatures, quantities and work hours (i.e. daily diaries, labor compliance interviews and field test results in the Pen system; quant lists; Employee Timecard Entry).
Learns how to read and interpret project plans, contract documents, specifications and standard drawings that are used on assigned construction projects. Learns how to perform field tests to ensure compliance with specifications (i.e. slump and air entrainment of cement concrete, moisture content, percent of rock and compaction via sand cone and/or nuclear gauge. Learns how to sample materials and complete 'sample transmittals' in accordance with ADOT's Materials Manual (i.e. aggregates, earthen materials casts, cement concrete cylinders, bituminous materials wire products, geotextile materials, reinforcing steel and other materials as required).
Learn how to calculate areas of geometric and irregular shapes; calculates volume using three dimensional measurements; calculates spread and application rates of materials incorporated into projects. Attends meetings and required training. Learns fundamental concepts of the Arizona Management System. The work schedule is variable and may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
*Transportation related engineering properties and procedures.
*Federal and State Regulations involving construction, engineering, and environmental procedures.
*Current civil engineering practices and procedures.
Skill in:
*Oral and written communication.
*Computer applications; including Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
Ability to:
*Plan and prioritize work assignments.
*Process and analyze information regarding complex transportation related issues.
*Operate a computer and use/learn specialized software programs.
*Establish and maintain work relationships.
*Operate a motor vehicle safely.

Selective Preference(s):

Current college student, at the sophomore level or higher, pursuing a major in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a transportation and/or engineering-related discipline.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
Valid driver's license with an acceptable 39-month motor vehicle history.
Must be enrolled at a college or university in a program related to the position.
