Volunteer Opportunity: 5K Volunteer Captains 

EveryMind will host a community 5K race and 1K walk on May 10, 2026. This is an early-morning event designed to raise funds, promote mental wellness, and bring together participants of all ages through activities like warm-ups, sponsor activations, and engagement with local leaders. Organized by the Marketing Department, the race event will run for about four hours and aims to strengthen community connection while recognizing volunteers and attracting individuals, teams, and groups from across the area.

We’re looking for enthusiastic Volunteers to join us in promoting EveryMind’s mission. As a Volunteer, you will play a key role in supporting our event and outreach activities, engaging directly with the community to raise awareness. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Race Set-Up: Get the event energized and ready to go!

  • Water Stations: Keep runners hydrated and motivated!

  • Chip Collection & Tear Down: Support essential end-of-race operations.

  • Cheer Stations: Bring the energy and rally your team to hype up racers!

  • Food Handling: Help coordinate post-race refreshments.

  • Sponsorship Signage: Ensure partner signage shines in all the right places.

  • Packet Pick-Up (race experience required): Lead with confidence by understanding race flow and participant needs.

  • Course Marshals (race experience required): Help ensure participants stay on course and stay safe.

Leadership & Communication
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for your volunteer team. Questions, guidance, motivation, you’re their go-to leader.

  • Send clear updates and communications to your assigned volunteers.

  • Print and prepare race-day materials for your team.

Pre-Race Involvement
  • Attend pre-race planning meetings to align on expectations, roles, and logistics.

  • Support light administrative tasks to ensure your team is set up for success.

    Commitment per Volunteer: 

    • We are seeking SIX 6 Volunteer Captains for a 3-week commitment, 8 hours per week, leading up to race day. 
    • Race Day is Sunday, May 10; seeking volunteers to start on/round Monday, April 20. 

    What You’ll Receive:

    • Training: Comprehensive training on community outreach, marketing, event coordination, business development. 
    • Meaningful Impact: A unique opportunity to make a difference and contribute to EveryMind’s mission.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must be 18 years or older.
    • Must be willing to use their personal cell phone to make outreach calls (you’ll use an app-based internal number...your personal number stays private). 
    • Must have access to a personal laptop or be able to work from the EveryMind office at 1000 Twinbrook Pkwy.
    • Access to reliable transportation and a willingness to travel to local events, including transporting materials from our Rockville office to event locations.
    • Comfortable leading a team of ~10 volunteers with confidence, clarity, and positivity. Ability to motivate, delegate, and provide direction in fast-paced environments.
    • Strong verbal and written communication; able to send updates, answer questions, and provide guidance. Professional, friendly, and approachable demeanor.
    • Comfortable preparing materials, checking rosters, and supporting light administrative tasks.Strong attention to detail. 
    • Problem-Solving Mindset; ability to think quickly, troubleshoot small issues, and support volunteers in real time.
    • Experience with race operations, customer service, sports events, or other fast-paced event settings is helpful. Experience is required for Team Captains leading Packet Pick-Up or Course Marshal teams.

    What we are looking for in a Volunteer: 

    • Show up on time, follows through on commitments, and can work independently while also being a strong team player.
    • Able to attend the required in-person orientation/training session and willing to participate in two assigned race-related events (1x/month)
    • Friendly, positive, and able to represent EveryMind with professionalism.
    • Passionate about mental health awareness and EveryMind’s mission (or excited to learn). 
    • The volunteer must pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting. All volunteers must be free of illegal drugs and abuse of alcohol, and must be fully able to always perform all required duties.
