What is a Vmware engineer?

VMware Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, and managing virtualization solutions using VMware technologies. They are responsible for creating and maintaining virtual environments, optimizing system performance, and ensuring high availability of virtual machines. VMware Engineers often work with vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and other VMware products to support business needs, troubleshoot issues, and enhance infrastructure scalability and security.

What does a Vmware engineer do?

A VMware engineer is a technical computer professional who uses virtualization software from VMware to complete their job duties. This software allows you to virtualize Windows servers and connect them to your network or the cloud. In this virtual environment, the server is not a separate physical machine, and the VMware platform lets you logically define multiple virtual servers on a single host machine. The qualifications for a career as a VMware engineer include a computer science degree and skills certification from VMware.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vmware engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VMware Engineer, you need a solid understanding of virtualization concepts, networking, and server infrastructure, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field and relevant VMware certifications (like VCP). Proficiency with VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and tools such as PowerCLI or other automation platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure reliable virtual environments, efficient troubleshooting, and successful collaboration with IT teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Vmware engineers when managing large-scale virtual environments?

VMware Engineers often encounter challenges such as resource contention, maintaining high availability, and ensuring security compliance across numerous virtual machines. Managing and optimizing performance while minimizing downtime can be complex, especially as environments grow. Additionally, keeping up with software updates, patches, and integrating new technologies requires continuous learning and effective collaboration with network, storage, and security teams.

Job description

About Sapphire Health

At Sapphire Health, we are at the forefront of operating the technology infrastructure that keeps healthcare running. Our Technology Infrastructure team builds and operates the compute, virtualization, storage, identity, and cloud platforms that healthcare providers depend on to deliver exceptional patient care. We combine enterprise-grade infrastructure technologies with proven expertise to keep critical clinical and business systems available, resilient, and secure. If you are passionate about infrastructure engineering and motivated to make a meaningful impact in healthcare, we invite you to join our dynamic team.

Position Overview

The Infrastructure Engineer is a mid-level technical role on the Sapphire Health infrastructure team, responsible for building, configuring, operating, and optimizing the infrastructure platforms that keep our healthcare clients' critical systems running. This role operates across the core infrastructure stack: compute and virtualization, storage and data protection, and cloud, supporting a fleet of more than 1,000 physical and virtual servers. The Infrastructure Engineer is expected to operate with increasing independence across these domains, taking ownership of platform administration, build and migration work, performance optimization, and infrastructure incident response. Our primary platforms include VMware vSphere as the server hypervisor, Cisco UCS and Dell PowerEdge compute, NetApp ONTAP storage, Rubrik data protection, and Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services; equivalent product experience is valued, and platform-specific training is provided. Working closely with the Technical Architect and supporting the development of junior team members, this position is central to maintaining operational excellence and resilience across our managed healthcare environments.

Location & Onsite Requirement

This is a full-time onsite position based in our downtown New Orleans office. Candidates must be located in, or willing to relocate to, the greater New Orleans area. This role is not remote.

Core Qualifications

  • 4+ years of progressive infrastructure engineering experience across virtualization, storage, identity, and cloud
  • Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere (vCenter and ESXi); experience with Citrix Hypervisor (XenServer) or other enterprise hypervisors (Nutanix AHV, Microsoft Hyper-V) also valued
  • Experience with enterprise compute hardware, primarily Cisco UCS and Dell PowerEdge
  • Hands-on experience with NetApp ONTAP storage (volumes, snapshots, replication)
  • Experience with enterprise backup and data protection platforms (e.g., Rubrik, Veeam, Commvault), including restores and recovery testing
  • Experience administering cloud resources across Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services
  • Experience administering enterprise identity infrastructure (Active Directory, Entra ID, ADFS, and PKI)
  • Citrix application and desktop delivery experience a plus (StoreFront, Delivery Controllers, machine catalogs, NetScaler)
  • Azure Virtual Desktop experience a plus
  • SolarWinds experience a plus

Key Responsibilities

Compute & Virtualization

  • Build, configure, and maintain the VMware vSphere environment (vCenter and ESXi) that hosts all server workloads, including provisioning and performance optimization
  • Provision and manage enterprise compute on Cisco UCS and Dell PowerEdge
  • Provision, right-size, and troubleshoot virtual machines supporting clinical and business workloads across a fleet of more than 1,000 servers
  • Support the Citrix Hypervisor (XenServer) environment that underpins virtual desktop delivery

Storage, Backup & Recovery
