A Vivarium Manager oversees the daily operations of a facility that houses live animals for research, education, or breeding purposes. Their responsibilities include ensuring proper animal care, maintaining compliance with regulations, managing staff, and coordinating research activities. They also oversee facility maintenance, supply inventory, and budget management. This role requires knowledge of animal husbandry, laboratory procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
A Vivarium Manager should possess expertise in animal husbandry, facility operations, and regulatory compliance, usually backed by a degree in biology, animal science, or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), environmental monitoring equipment, and certifications such as AALAS (American Association for Laboratory Animal Science) certification are highly valuable. Strong leadership, organizational skills, and effective communication are essential for managing staff and coordinating with research teams. These competencies are critical to ensure the well-being of animals, adherence to compliance standards, and the smooth operation of vivarium facilities.
Vivarium Managers frequently encounter the challenge of balancing animal welfare with research requirements, ensuring all protocols and regulations are strictly followed. They also must handle unforeseen issues such as equipment malfunctions, biosecurity risks, and the need for prompt response to emergency animal care situations. Effective time management is key as the role often requires oversight of multiple staff members and coordination with various research teams. Being proactive, detail-oriented, and adaptable helps managers maintain high standards in a dynamic laboratory environment, contributing to the success of the research being conducted.
