Job description

Animal Breeder

Great opportunity for professionals with an Animal Science, Agriculture, or a closely related Bachelor's degree interested in working in the U.S. on a TN Visa. Only citizens of Canada and Mexico are eligible for the TN Visa program.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Perform daily estrus detection on both sows and gilts; perform daily artificial insemination; rotate semen; record movement, breeding, and weaning of each sow;
  • Assist with breeding gilts and checking for pregnancy; attending sows in labor; providing care to newborn piglets;
  • Assist with gilt and sow treatments and group medication;
  • Maintain accurate records regarding genetic lines, estrus cycles, services of artificial insemination, conception rate, vaccinations, animal health, weight gain, and other details to maintain and improve production methods.
  • The Animal Breeder must also use their knowledge to assist with the birthing stage, process newborn piglets according to their age, perform castration, vaccination, tail clipping, and other medical treatment as needed.
  • Animal Breeders will also be responsible for ensuring animals have sufficient feed and water, tracking food and water consumption;
  • Detecting illness and injury, providing treatment to animals with illness or injury, performing animal sacrifice when necessary; and ensuring department cleanliness and following biosecurity protocols.
  • The Animal Breeders must also keep accurate and detailed records of heat cycles, insemination conception rates, genetics, gestation cycles, etc. This skill is of utmost importance as it impacts improving genetic selection, determining genetic performance, analyzing genetic quality and individual sow performance.
