Home Based Vivarium Jobs (NOW HIRING)

The Laboratory Animal Medical Services (LAMS) department in the Office of Research at the University of Cincinnati provides husbandry and veterinary care to all vertebrate animals used in research, teaching, and testing.

The LAMS department is currently accepting applications for multiple Vivarium Supervisors. These positions play a central role in ensuring high quality, compliant, and efficient operations across multiple research animal facilities. The supervisor oversees animal care technicians who provide daily health monitoring and continuous husbandry, as well as cage wash staff who process caging, supplies, and enrichment items in support of animal care operations and the technicians.  They ensure all rooms, equipment, and processes meet regulatory standards of the IACUC, USDA, and AAALAC International.

• Facilitate and schedule the care and feeding for laboratory animal programs. Assist with oversight of the health and welfare of all species. Coordinate transportation schedules of animals, supplies, and equipment. Track and submit orders for feed, bedding, and other supplies. Manage hazardous waste disposal.
• Inspect animal rooms for sanitation, proper operation of mechanical equipment and condition of cages; ensure compliance with federal/state laws, university policies and procedures, and maintenance of American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) accreditation. Participate in regulatory and accreditation inspections/site visits.  Monitor and track monthly temperature and humidity reports. Report issues and concerns to the appropriate level.
• Coordinate maintenance and repairs for facilities and equipment. Oversee census management, husbandry service requests, inventory, and manage billing of inventory and services. Provide training to LAMS husbandry staff and researchers.
• Coordinate time off work schedules, weekend/holiday schedules, facility rotation schedules, and overtime. Assist with departmental goal planning and development of policies and procedures. Coordinate meetings and assist with continuing education opportunities. Serve a liaison with researchers.
• Review and approve researcher husbandry service requests by cross referencing protocol information.
• Prepare and/or maintain various reports and files.
• Participate in an on-call rotation.
• May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

• Bachelor’s Degree must be in related field.
• Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

• Three (3) years in laboratory animal science.
• One (1) year supervision.

• Demonstrated reliability, including consistent attendance and dependability.
• Strong verbal and written communication, customer service, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
• Advanced levels of AALAS certification such as LATg or CMAR.
