What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visualization Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visualization Engineer, you need expertise in data visualization principles, programming languages like JavaScript or Python, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with visualization libraries (such as D3.js, Tableau, or Power BI), data analytics platforms, and experience with databases are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and the ability to communicate complex data visually make someone stand out in this position. These skills are crucial for transforming raw data into actionable insights that drive informed decision-making across organizations.

How does a Visualization Engineer typically collaborate with data scientists and other stakeholders on projects?

Visualization Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between raw data and actionable insights. They work closely with data scientists to understand the underlying data sets, define the goals of the visualization, and ensure the technical feasibility of proposed solutions. Regular meetings and iterative feedback sessions with business stakeholders are common to ensure the visualizations meet business requirements and usability standards. This collaboration often involves translating complex analytical findings into intuitive visuals that help guide decision-making across teams.

What is a Visualization Engineer?

Role: Data Visualization Engineer BI Dashboards & Visual Analytics
Location: Morristown, NJ (Hybrid 3 days/week onsite)
Were seeking a Data Visualization Engineer (6+ years) who combines strong BI engineering with design intuition to deliver interactive dashboards and insight-driven visual narratives. Key Responsibilities
  • Build interactive dashboards, reports, and visualizations that communicate KPIs, trends, and insights.
  • Translate business needs into effective visual stories, measures, and calculated metrics.
  • Select the right visualization patterns, layouts, and interactions for different audiences.
  • Connect BI tools to enterprise sources (cloud warehouses, relational DBs, APIs, files).
  • Design and optimize semantic layers/data models (star/snowflake, relationships, aggregations).
  • Ensure strong UX and accessibility (WCAG): hierarchy, color, typography, and usability.
  • Maintain visualization standards, templates, and style guides for consistency.
  • Improve performance through query tuning, caching, incremental refresh, and efficient modeling.
  • Partner with data engineers to ensure data quality, reliability, and documentation.
  • Enable self-service analytics via training, documentation, and reusable templates.
  • Perform peer reviews and provide technical guidance within the BI environment.
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years in data visualization/BI engineering (or related).
  • Expert in Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or Qlik Sense.
  • Strong SQL for large-scale querying and optimization.
  • Strong BI modeling knowledge: semantic modeling, star/snowflake schemas, measures, aggregations.
  • Experience integrating BI tools with Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Azure Synapse, or Redshift.
  • Strong understanding of visualization principles, UX, and accessibility standards.
  • Proven delivery of polished, production-ready dashboards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deliverables.
Preferred
  • Multiple BI tools; Python/R for data prep; Git/CI/CD for BI.
  • Governance/catalog exposure; experience in regulated industries.
