Job description

Position Overview

The Senior Project Manager role displays a comprehensive understanding of complex transportation design and analysis concepts across a wide range of project types.  They are capable of exercising independent judgement in evaluating, selecting, and applying design techniques and procedures and building project teams.  They also exercise professional judgement when developing plans and reports.  Focus on quality project delivery through adherence to McAdams' quality assurance and quality control standards. Success in this role is defined by displaying proficiency in all the key responsibilities outlined below as well as integration into the McAdams culture e.g. by joining an ERG or community outreach company event.

Key Responsibilities

  • Display competency in and thorough understanding of requirements of Project Manager.
  • Lead and participate in business development activities including meeting with clients and developing project teams. Lead and participate in and development of detailed proposal materials. Develop an understanding of key client's program and develop personal client relationships. Develop and maintain relationships with key teaming partners.
  • Apply working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Microstation/Geopak/OpenRoads and/or traffic analysis software as appropriate and a comprehensive understanding of available CAD tools and commands; standalone software; GIS; Correct application of design and CAD standards.
  • Serve as project manager for a wide range of project types and sizes, including the firm's most complex projects. Lead the development of scope, schedules, and fees at the task and project level. Track and be actively manage tasks and project budgets and schedules and project performance relative to key metrics. Manage subconsultant activity. Understand, document, monitor, and mitigate project risks of all types. Serve as the primary point of contact with the client at the project and programmatic level. Ensure client satisfaction by providing a high level of client service and excellent communication. Monitor and aggressively pursue accounts receivable.
  • Perform supervision of project staff across all project activities. Effectively manage technical work and personal and career growth of direct reports. Work closely with accounting throughout the project lifecycle to appropriately set up, track, bill, and close out a project.
  • Lead design tasks independently using McAdams approved software. Prepare technical reports and edit technical reports prepared by others. Develop specifications, special provisions, and bid documents. Lead calculations in at the project level.
  • Redline plans and designs and provide appropriate feedback to project staff, particularly as it relates to the scope of a project. Maintain accurate and complete project files and documentation. Report to practice and business line management on the performance of a portfolio of projects.
  • Be an active participant and take a leadership role in professional organizations. Presents at local, regional, and national technical conferences. Be viewed as an expert in chosen field.
  • Interacts positively with staff, general public, officials, and teaming partners.
  • Serve as the face of McAdams in meetings with clients.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced staff even if those staff are not direct reports.
  • Actively participates in McAdams company functions. Serves as a mentor to other McAdams staff.
  • Involvement in outreach activities with community service organizations, including activities sponsored by McAdams SHARES, is strongly desired.
  • Actively and aggressively develop and utilize relationships with industry peers to recruit staff to McAdams across all disciplines.

Skills + Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum (or equivalent) / bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or related field of study, plus appropriate continuing education
  • Must have 4-6 years of experience as Project Manager or equivalent relevant experience
  • PE, RLA or equivalent certification
  • Demonstrate proficiency and independence in core competencies of Project Manager
  • Excellent oral and written communication and time management skills; completes tasks efficiently
