Visual Director information

What is a visual director?

A Visual Director is a creative professional responsible for overseeing the overall visual style and imagery of a project, brand, or organization. They collaborate with teams such as designers, photographers, videographers, and marketing specialists to ensure that visual elements align with the intended message and brand identity. Visual Directors make key decisions about color schemes, layouts, and visual storytelling, often guiding the creative process from concept to execution. Their work is essential in maintaining a cohesive and impactful visual presence across all platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a visual director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Director, you need a strong background in visual design, branding, and creative direction, often supported by a degree in graphic design, visual arts, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with project management tools are typically required. Leadership, collaboration, and the ability to communicate creative concepts clearly are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure cohesive brand visuals, effective team management, and high-impact creative outcomes that drive organizational goals.

How much do visual directors make?

The average salary for a visual director is typically between $70,000 and $130,000 per year, depending on experience, industry, and location. Senior visual directors or those in high-demand sectors can earn higher compensation, often supplemented with bonuses and benefits.

How does a visual director typically collaborate with other departments in a creative organization?

A Visual Director works closely with various departments such as marketing, product design, and editorial to ensure visual consistency across all channels. They often lead brainstorming sessions, provide creative direction, and coordinate with photographers, graphic designers, and video teams to execute campaigns. Effective communication and a collaborative mindset are essential, as the Visual Director must balance creative vision with brand guidelines and project objectives. This cross-functional collaboration is key to producing cohesive and impactful visual content that aligns with the company’s goals.

Job description

Company Description
Vuori is re-defining what athletic apparel looks like: built to move and sweat in but designed with a casual aesthetic to transition into everyday life. We draw inspiration from an active coastal California lifestyle; an integration of fitness, creative expression and life. Our high energy fast paced retail environment is reflected in the clothes we make. We aim to inspire others to take on all aspects of their lives with clarity, enthusiasm and purpose...while having a lot of fun along the way. We are proud to be an outlet for opportunity and for personal growth and success.
Job Description
Vuori is seeking a visionary, strategic retail leader to define and elevate how our brand comes to life across both owned retail and wholesale partner environments. As Vice President of Visual Merchandising, you will set the global creative and strategic direction for Vuori's visual expression - ensuring our product, storytelling, and brand standards are executed with clarity, consistency, and commercial impact wherever the brand shows up.
This role sits at the intersection of brand, product, retail execution, and wholesale partnership. You will own the global visual merchandising strategy, establish the creative standards that define Vuori's in-store experience, and ensure those standards are translated into clear, scalable guidelines for both owned stores and strategic wholesale partners. As Vuori continues to grow domestically and internationally, this role is critical to protecting and elevating brand integrity at scale.
As a key member of the Retail leadership team, you will partner closely with leaders across Brand, Product, Merchandising, Wholesale, Retail Operations, Planning, and Store Design to ensure Vuori delivers a best-in-class customer experience while driving productivity, growth, and long-term brand equity.
What you'll get to do:
Global Visual Strategy & Brand Expression
  • Define and lead the global visual merchandising vision for Vuori across all owned retail stores
  • Establish the creative standards that guide how product, storytelling, and brand come to life in physical environments
  • Ensure a consistent, elevated brand expression across all global retail locations
  • Continuously evolve visual standards to reflect Vuori's brand evolution, product innovation, and international growth
  • Drive innovation in floor sets, styling, mannequin strategy, fixtures, and storytelling that differentiates Vuori's in-store experience

Wholesale & Partner Brand Expression
  • Own the visual brand expression of Vuori across wholesale and strategic partner environments, including key accounts such as REI, Nordstrom, and future global partners
  • Define and deliver clear visual merchandising brand guidelines, standards, and toolkits that translate Vuori's retail vision into scalable wholesale execution
  • Establish creative guardrails for how Vuori product, fixtures, signage, and storytelling show up in partner doors - ensuring consistency, quality, and brand integrity
  • Serve as the final visual authority for wholesale VM decisions, balancing brand elevation with partner realities and commercial goals
  • Partner closely with Wholesale, Brand, and Marketing to align seasonal storytelling, product priorities, and launch moments across owned and non-owned environments

Creative Leadership & Vision
  • Set the creative bar for the organization, inspiring teams to deliver best-in-class visual work
  • Translate brand and product narratives into compelling, commercial in-store storytelling
  • Anticipate visual opportunities and proactively bring forward ideas that elevate the customer experience
  • Balance art and commerce, ensuring visual presentation drives both inspiration and sell-through
  • Stay deeply connected to the competitive landscape, global retail trends, and evolving customer expectations

Global Execution & Operating Model
  • Build and lead a scalable global visual merchandising organization capable of supporting rapid fleet growth
  • Develop visual tools, systems, and communication frameworks that enable consistent execution across regions and channels
  • Ensure field teams and partners have clear direction, resources, and training to deliver visual standards
  • Create strong feedback loops between stores, partners, and headquarters to continuously refine execution
  • Establish rhythms that support seasonal transitions, launches, and new store openings

Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Partner closely with Brand, Product, Merchandising, Wholesale, Planning, Store Design, and Retail Operations to ensure visual strategy supports broader business priorities
  • Align product launches, seasonal storytelling, and store experiences across owned and wholesale channels
  • Influence cross-functional decision-making related to store presentation, product density, and customer experience
  • Serve as a senior leadership voice shaping the future of Vuori's physical brand experience globally

Commercial Impact & Business Leadership
  • Ensure visual merchandising strategies drive productivity, sell-through, and customer engagement
  • Use business insights and store performance data to refine visual strategies across channels
  • Own visual merchandising investment priorities with strong financial and operational discipline
  • Pressure-test major initiatives to ensure they are strategic, scalable, and value-accretive
  • Connect visual strategy to broader company goals around growth, brand strength, and customer loyalty

Organizational Leadership
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing global visual merchandising team
  • Set clear expectations for creative excellence, accountability, and leadership behaviors
  • Develop talent pipelines and succession plans for critical visual roles
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and strong cross-functional partnership
  • Ensure the VM organization is structured to support long-term global growth

Qualifications
Who you are:
  • 15+ years of progressive visual merchandising leadership experience within premium retail, lifestyle, fashion, or performance apparel
  • Proven experience setting visual strategy and creative direction at scale, not just executing directives
  • Experience developing and governing visual merchandising standards across owned retail and wholesale or partner-led environments
  • Strong creative point of view with the ability to translate brand vision into clear, executable standards
  • Demonstrated ability to balance creative vision with operational excellence
  • Strong commercial mindset with a deep understanding of how visual merchandising drives retail performance
  • Exceptional cross-functional leader capable of influencing senior stakeholders
  • Experienced people leader with a track record of building and scaling high-performing teams
  • Comfortable operating in a high-growth, fast-paced retail environment
  • Passion for brand storytelling, retail innovation, and creating meaningful customer experiences
