Job description

As a Document Design Specialist, you will work with our planning, environmental, traffic, and public engagement teams to design, format, and produce high-quality technical and public-facing documents.
  • Design, format, and produce high-quality technical and public-facing documents for  planning, environmental, traffic, and public engagement projects.
  • Develop creative ways to transform complex environmental and engineering information into visually engaging, easy-to-understand graphics and layouts for clients, agencies, and the public.
  • Prepare creative document layouts and graphics using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and other design software while maintaining company branding and project requirements.
  • Create and edit maps, exhibits, infographics, tables, diagrams, and aerial imagery to effectively communicate project information.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain complex technical reports, including environmental documents with detailed formatting, cross-references, and sophisticated tables of contents.
  • Label and edit maps and figures to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency across project deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, environmental planners, scientists, and project managers to develop compelling project documentation.
  • Perform thorough quality control reviews to ensure documents are accurate, visually consistent, and free of formatting, grammatical, and typographical errors.
  • Assist with writing, editing, and proofreading document content to improve readability while maintaining technical accuracy.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment.
  • Stay current on document design trends and identify opportunities to improve the quality and effectiveness of project deliverables.
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, , Technical Communications, Environmental Planning, or a related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of professional experience designing and creating complex documents in Adobe InDesign, preferably within the transportation engineering, environmental,  consulting industry.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Illustrator; experience with Photoshop is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience designing technical reports, environmental documents, proposals, or similar large-format publications.
  • Strong understanding of document layout principles, typography, visual hierarchy, and information design.
  • Experience working with aerial photography, maps, exhibits, and figure development.
  • Ability to organize and format lengthy technical documents, including creating and maintaining complex tables of contents, styles, cross-references, and page numbering.
  • Excellent attention to detail with strong proofreading, editing, and quality assurance skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information in a clear, concise, and visually appealing way for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to interpret engineering and environmental concepts and translate them into compelling visual communications.
  • Experience with GIS, AutoCAD, or mapping software is a plus but not required.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional quality.
  • A portfolio showcasing document layout, publication design, maps, or technical communication work is preferred.
