POSITION SUMMARYThe Visual Communications Specialist reports to Director of Communications to visually communicate important messages and information to the public. This position uses creative skills to bring new and innovative ideas to the table and contributes to the overall success of the city's visual communication efforts.ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Actively participates in official City communications1. Uses visual design to support department staff in formulating messages to achieve goals2. Updates city webpages and supports departments with revisions and updates3. Assists in formulating and implementing the city's communication strategy4. Communicates effectively with team members and stakeholders to gather feedback, incorporate changes, and ensure project goals are metGraphic design1. Develops visually appealing and effective designs for various communication materials including but not limited to print ads, digital graphics, city television monitors, social media posts, and promotional materials2. Collaborates with various departments and stakeholders to understand their design needs and produces high-quality designs that align with the city's messaging and branding strategy3. Stays current with design trends and techniques to continuously improve the visual communication strategies of the city4. Takes ownership of assigned projects from concept to completion, ensuring that all deadlines and requirements are met5. Creates and maintains a library of design assets and templates for easy access and consistency in branding6. Assists in creating and maintaining an organized and efficient workflow for design projects7. Proactively identifies and suggests opportunities for improvement in design processes and strategiesBranding1. Maintains a high level of attention to detail and accuracy in all designs and project deliverables2. Adheres to city brand guidelines to ensure consistency across all platforms3. Monitors other graphic materials by departments and third-party vendors for proper adherence to city branding guidelines4. Collaborates with printers and other vendors to ensure that the quality of printed materials meets city standardsOther duties as assignedMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in visual communications/design/arts, or related field from an accredited college or universityFour years of relevant experience or any equivalent combination of related education and job experienceMust be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background checkESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESMastery of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, etc.)Working knowledge of professional printing processesExcellent communication skills, both verbally and in writingAbility to translate ideas and messages into effective and appealing visual designSkill in creating professional and concise written, verbal, and graphic public statements and presentationsExcellence in interacting with and supporting diverse people from a wide variety of backgrounds, while displaying cultural competency, patience, and good customer serviceAbility to maintain confidential and sensitive informationExcellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasksAbility to work independently and delegate tasks as neededAbility to work as a team member and to build collaborationAbility to communicate effectively in a crisis or emergent situationAbility to stay up-to-date on current affairs related to the City of South Salt LakeAbility to work evenings and weekends, as needed
