Virtual Teaching 1099 information

What is a virtual teaching 1099?

A Virtual Teaching 1099 position refers to teaching students online as an independent contractor rather than as a traditional employee. The '1099' designation indicates that the teacher receives a 1099 tax form, meaning they are responsible for their own taxes, benefits, and work expenses. Virtual teachers in these roles often work remotely for online schools, tutoring companies, or educational platforms, and may have flexible schedules. This arrangement provides autonomy but also requires self-management and organization.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a virtual teaching 1099?

To thrive as a Virtual Teacher (1099), you need subject matter expertise, a relevant teaching credential, and experience with online instruction. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), video conferencing platforms, and digital assessment tools is typically required. Strong communication, self-motivation, and adaptability help you engage students and effectively manage remote classrooms. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality instruction, maintaining student engagement, and ensuring learning outcomes in a virtual environment.

How do virtual teaching 1099 contractors collaborate with full-time staff and other educators?

As a virtual teaching 1099 contractor, you’ll often work independently but will regularly collaborate with full-time staff and fellow educators through virtual meetings, shared lesson planning, or online communication platforms. You may be invited to participate in team discussions, teacher trainings, and curriculum development sessions to ensure consistency and alignment with school standards. Building strong communication skills and proactive engagement with the team can help foster a supportive teaching environment. While you have flexibility as an independent contractor, maintaining open lines of communication is essential for student success and seamless coordination.

Job description

About Stepful:
Stepful is a workforce platform redefining how America's largest health systems build, train, and retain their talent. Since our founding in 2021, Stepful's trained over 32,000 practice-ready healthcare workers.
Layering onto our successful direct-to-consumer training, Stepful partners with leading healthcare institutions to address the growing national shortage of healthcare workers. We're improving access to quality healthcare for everyone, everywhere, and improving access to healthcare career ladders for those who need them most.
Our students form the talent pipelines for major employers such as NY-Presbyterian, Mt. Sinai, HCA, Providence, CVS, and Walgreens. We have partnerships with half of the top 10 health systems in the US and are in process with many more.
Stepful is backed by Y Combinator, Reach Capital, and AlleyCorp, with a recent $55M Series C led by Oak HC/FT. We were named the #1 EdTech company in the U.S. by TIME for 2025.
Our values:
We credit much of our success to our exceptional team. We're looking for mission-driven builders who thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, and embody our four core values:
  • Care first: We do whatever it takes for our students to succeed.
  • Learn quickly: We test, learn with data, and iterate.
  • Build together: We win when we rely on each other.
  • Own it: We show up, take initiative, and show pride.

The opportunity:
We are seeking experienced and passionate Adjunct Instructors to join Stepful's bench of virtual educators supporting the 16-week virtual and synchronous didactic portion of our Surgical Technologist program. This role is ideal for instructors who are interested in supporting existing cohorts as substitute instructors when coverage is needed, while also being considered for future cohort teaching opportunities as new classes launch.
Stepful's instructor-led programs are designed to support students every step of the way, from preparing for NCCT certification to launching successful careers in surgical services. We're looking for educators who are excited to deliver high-quality online instruction, foster student confidence, and help learners succeed in a virtual classroom environment.
This is a fully remote, part-time, 1099 contract role.
What you'll do:
  • Teach highly-engaging, live, virtual classes over Zoom four times a week
    • Didactic classes usually take begin between 1-3:30pm EST, Monday - Thursday
  • Communicate regularly with students over email and other communication tools
  • Provide ongoing support, troubleshoot issues, and prepare and plan for future modules, as needed
  • Deliver clear, engaging instruction aligned to Stepful's standardized curriculum
  • Support students in understanding Sterile Processing concepts across CRCST exam domains
  • Assess student understanding through assignments, quizzes, and in-class participation
  • Provide timely feedback and targeted remediation to students who are struggling academically or with confidence
  • Document student progress, attendance, and performance in Stepful systems
  • Collaborate with Stepful's learning team to ensure alignment with program goals and student needs
  • Offer insights to improve the student experience and curriculum delivery

What you'll bring:
  • Active Surgical Technologist Certification
  • 3+ years of experience as a certified Surgical Technologist in a clinical setting
  • Experience teaching, training, tutoring, or instructing students or staff
  • Comfortability teaching live online classes over Zoom
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable using LMS platforms and virtual teaching tools
  • Ability to follow a standardized curriculum while adapting explanations to different learning styles
  • Commitment to inclusive, accessible, and career-focused healthcare education
  • Ability to work 10 hours per week per class, Monday - Thursday

Bonus points if:
  • You have experience teaching Surgical Technology or NCCT exam preparation
  • You have experience supporting diverse, underserved, or non-traditional student populations
  • You have experience with online or hybrid education programs
  • You have familiarity with competency-based education

Interview Process:
  • Intro Call with Talent Team
  • Case Study Assignment
  • Final Interview with Hiring Manager

The hourly pay rate for this opportunity is $30.00 - $35.00/hour. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by a number of factors including experience, internal pay equity and other relevant business considerations.
Stepful is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or other applicable legally protected characteristic.
