Job description

Job Purpose:
The Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) provides individualized educationally-based speech and language therapy to students. The SLP is responsible for developing, implementing and relating the daily activities of the students to the core curriculum. Through continuous collaboration with a variety of individuals and groups, including parents, district and county personnel and various agencies, the SLP provides for the academic, social and emotional growth of each student by using a variety of instructional strategies. The SLP continually assesses students progress to maximize their fullest potential. The SLP will identify and provide remedial services for students with impairments of language, speech and hearing. This position serves as a resource person to regular and special education teachers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Establish close rapport while screening and identifying pupils with communicative disorders; select cases according to appropriate criteria determined primarily by the speech-language and hearing pathologist;
Employ professionally sound and valid diagnostic procedures, techniques, behavior samples and stand tests necessary for thorough and accurate evaluation and convey pertinent information to cooperating personnel and to parents carrying on instruction in class and training at home;
Ability to select and put into use additional professional resources when supplementary diagnostic information is needed (e.g., psychologist, nurse, physician);
Formulate explicit and appropriate short and long term therapeutic objectives to meet individual needs of pupils;
Guide pupils toward an awareness of their responsibility for modifying the behavior which characterizes their communicative disorder;
Ability to record and analyze responses related to improving pupil communication skills;
Utilize effective evaluative strategies and results to improve services to pupils;
Ability to redefine objectives and modify therapy as needed while keeping parents and school collaborators informed;
Provide reinforced progress within the therapy situation to provide for effective techniques and reinforcement within other environments (on-campus instruction by teachers; home instruction by parents);
Develop and implement appropriate follow-up procedure for pupils transferring to other programs or regular classes;
Maintain necessary confidential case-study and necessary open records according to professional ethics, district policy and statute;
Plan, and then conduct appropriate and informative teacher and parent conferences;
Participate in appropriate Evaluation and Placement Committees and other district meetings;
Participate in conferences with school, county, and community personnel;
Demonstrate continuing professional growth;
Contribute to community information efforts (e.g., brochures, video tape recording, meetings);
When appropriate, collaborate with psychologist managing the case to initiate referrals to other agencies and allied disciplines;
Perform such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Possession of a bachelors degree earned from a regionally accredited college or university in Speech-Language Pathology, Communicative Disorder, or closely aligned field;
Possession of a valid California Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential in Language, Speech and Hearing, or the ability to obtain a waiver for the Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential;
Possession of a valid California Drivers License.
Physical demands:
Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
Occasional or frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time
Occasional computer work including but not limited to typing
