What is a Virtual RN?

A Virtual RN, or Virtual Registered Nurse, is a licensed nurse who provides patient care and support remotely using digital communication tools such as video calls, phone calls, and secure messaging. Virtual RNs can perform tasks like patient assessments, care coordination, health education, and monitoring chronic conditions without being physically present. They often work in telehealth settings, supporting patients at home or in clinical environments by collaborating with onsite healthcare teams. This role helps improve access to healthcare, especially for patients in rural or underserved areas.

What does a Virtual RN do?

Telemedicine is a branch of telehealth, which allows virtual RNs to use electronic information and technology to treat patients. As a virtual RN, your responsibilities are to monitor and care for patients remotely as well as support nurses who are in actual facilities. You work from home or another remote location, using a computer, phone, and various software and programs to review medical records and assist with the assessment and treatment of a patient. Your duties are similar to those of a regular nurse, minus the physical interactions. A virtual nurse may also work in other areas of health care, including telephone triage, insurance claims, and health informatics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual RN?

To thrive as a Virtual RN, you need a current RN license, strong clinical judgment, and experience in remote patient monitoring or telehealth settings. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and secure communication tools is essential. Excellent communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help build patient trust and ensure effective care delivery from a distance. These skills enable Virtual RNs to provide safe, high-quality care and maintain patient engagement in a digital healthcare environment.

How does a Virtual RN effectively collaborate with on-site healthcare teams to ensure continuity of patient care?

A Virtual RN works closely with on-site nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals by utilizing secure communication platforms, electronic health records, and scheduled video conferences. This collaboration ensures that patient assessments, care plans, and updates are effectively shared and coordinated. Virtual RNs often participate in interdisciplinary team meetings remotely and provide real-time support for patient triage, education, and clinical documentation. Strong communication skills and familiarity with telehealth technologies are vital to maintaining seamless care transitions and high-quality patient outcomes.

Job description

Inspired by faith. Driven by innovation. Powered by humankindness. CommonSpirit Health is building a healthier future for all through its integrated health services. As one of the nation’s largest nonprofit Catholic healthcare organizations, CommonSpirit Health delivers more than 20 million patient encounters annually through more than 2,300 clinics, care sites and 137 hospital-based locations, in addition to its home-based services and virtual care offerings. CommonSpirit has more than 157,000 employees, 45,000 nurses and 25,000 physicians and advanced practice providers across 24 states and contributes more than $4.2 billion annually in charity care, community benefits and unreimbursed government programs. Together with our patients, physicians, partners, and communities, we are creating a more just, equitable, and innovative healthcare delivery system.

As our Manager of Patient Access, you will lead the strategic and operational optimization of patient access initiatives across our primary and specialty care clinics and virtual service lines. This high-impact role is designed for a visionary leader who can harmonize operational efficiency with a patient-centered approach. You will serve as a key architect in designing standardized scheduling practices, driving governance, and expanding our innovative Virtualist Model to improve clinical throughput and patient outcomes across the Dignity Health Medical Foundation network.

Every day you will leverage business intelligence and data analytics to monitor access capacity, refine scheduling workflows, and balance the needs of new and returning patients to reduce clinician burnout. You will collaborate cross-functionally with Market Leadership, Clinical Operations, Revenue Cycle, and the CommonSpirit Command Center to troubleshoot access barriers, implement best-in-class digital touchpoints, and oversee the performance of our virtual care staff, including MAs, RNs, and APPs.

To be successful in this role, you will possess a versatile background in project management, process improvement, and healthcare operations. You will be an expert at translating complex data into actionable strategies that streamline the patient journey and enhance slot utilization. Your ability to engage physician champions and administrative stakeholders will be critical as you drive systemic improvements, ensure scheduling accuracy, and maintain a culture of excellence in patient service and operational health.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Operational Optimization: Design and implement comprehensive scheduling policies and standardized workflows to maximize clinic capacity and throughput.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilize business intelligence to identify improvement opportunities, reduce appointment no-shows, and optimize template management.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Act as a central point of contact for stakeholders, including clinical leadership and revenue cycle teams, to resolve escalations and foster cross-departmental alignment.
  • Patient Journey Innovation: Map and refine the end-to-end patient experience, focusing on reducing wait times and enhancing digital/asynchronous care accessibility.
  • Virtual Care Leadership: Drive the design and execution of the Virtualist Model, providing oversight and support for virtual Medical Assistants, Nurses, and Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Quality & Risk Management: Conduct regular audits and quality assurance reviews to ensure scheduling integrity, identifying systemic risks and implementing proactive corrective measures.
