Job description

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to be recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from a wide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research across various fields. Individuals in this position will perform technical work supporting the collaboration's scientific research.
Research Title: Statistical Metrology for Public Safety Communications
The work will entail: This project involves collaborative statistical research with NIST scientists, engineers, and statisticians to advance research in public safety communications. The goals of the research include enhancing the understanding and performance of public safety communication technology, developing a virtual simulation framework for uncrewed aircraft system communications, advancing standards and interoperability for mission critical services between land mobile radio and broadband systems, and evaluating user experience research. The teams involved in these research studies seek to use advanced statistical experimental design in the project planning phase, comprehensive data analysis and modeling of data from complex data structures, and statistical communication relevant to a broad audience.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Working with scientific collaborators to help define and clarify project goals and timelines
  • Designing experiments with statistical principles
  • Data cleaning and exploratory data analysis; for example, developing graphical displays and descriptive statistics
  • Statistical modeling and analysis of data in support of collaborative research goals (e.g., hierarchical modeling, predictive modeling, uncertainty analysis)
  • Implementation of statistical methods via high-level programming language such as R or Python
  • Presentation and communication of results and statistical analysis to non-statisticians

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in statistics or related field.
  • Experience with statistical study design, data cleaning and organizing, creating graphical displays, and statistical modeling, analysis, and computing (e.g., R, Python, Matlab)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Purpose: The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) hosts the Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) which is designed to provide valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduates, post-bachelor's degree holders, graduate students, master's degree holders, postdocs, and faculty.
PREP is a 5-year cooperative agreement between NIST laboratories and participating PREP Universities to establish a collaborative research relationship between NIST and U.S. institutions of higher education in the following disciplines including (but may not be limited to) biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, electronics, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron science, physical science, physics, and statistics. This collection of information is needed to facilitate administrative functions of the PREP Program.
Routine Uses: NIST will use the information collected to perform the requisite reviews of the applications to determine eligibility, and to meet programmatic requirements.
