Primary Purpose
The Instruction and Outreach librarian coordinates the instructional and reference/research services of the COCC Libraries. This faculty librarian is responsible for leading an active, multi-faceted library instruction program in a highly collaborative environment working closely with other library colleagues. The Instruction and Outreach Librarian works closely with other departmental faculty to integrate information literacy (IL) into the physical and virtual classrooms across all COCC campuses, including Redmond, Madras, and Prineville.
This position provides direction for the Library's reference and research service developing and assessing different approaches and initiatives to maintain and support its relevance for student success.
The Instruction and Outreach Librarian collaborates with colleagues to publicize and promote the library as the intellectual center of the campus community and works with colleagues to implement and further develop the Library's mission, vision, and strategic plan.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with library and other departmental faculty, is responsible for the planning, implementation, promotion and assessment of the Library's Information Literacy (IL) program;
  • Participate in all aspects of library instructional services, including teaching online, asynchronous credit courses as well as teaching one-shot instruction sessions, embedded librarian classes, and book-a librarian appointments on the main and branch campuses;
  • Collaborate with others as well as work individually to create course-specific resources, guides, and online tutorials for use in both traditional and virtual environments that meet student learning needs at all COCC campuses;
  • Support College Now courses and other K-12 initiatives that address information literacy;
  • Maintain current skills with library instruction techniques, technologies and information literacy theories. Stay involved in professional activities and advocate for Information Literacy at the state, regional and national level;
  • Provide leadership, plan, promote, and assess the library's reference/research assistance services to our students, faculty and other patron groups on all COCC campuses. Provide research assistance to students and faculty via the library's reference and research services;
  • Provide oversight and evaluation of the work of the Part-Time Instruction and Outreach Librarian on the Redmond campus;
  • Develop, implement, and assess reference/research and instructional library services to Bend, Redmond, Prineville, and Madras campuses;
  • Collaborate in the development of library marketing and outreach materials to promote library services at all COCC campuses, including the planning, implementation, and assessment of the Library's Outreach Plan;
  • Serve on the library's leadership team, which includes the Library Director, the Collection Development and Acquisitions Librarian, Head of Access Services, and the Systems and Discovery Librarian. Participate in general planning and policy implementation for the library.
  • Participate in library outreach activities (Bobcat Orientations, student or faculty trainings, Poetry Month activities, etc.);
  • Participate in the assessment of other library activities and programs;
  • Participate in student advising. Each COCC faculty member is required to provide academic advising to an average of 35 students;
  • Serve as COCC library representative to OpenOregon Open Educational Resources (OER)/Affordable Course Materials Workgroup and participate in related discussions about OER on COCC's campuses.
  • Provide community service. As part of their responsibilities and criteria for promotion, COCC expects faculty to provide community service, including service both inside the college's district and beyond (including state and national service);
  • Provide service to College. As part of their responsibilities and criteria for promotion, COCC requires faculty to be involved in collaborative efforts and take part in College governance. May serve on committees and also engage in individual efforts to improve the operation, systems, faculty/staff and student performance such as serving peer teams, assessment projects, significant accreditation efforts, new program development, or special projects/task forces as assigned;
  • Participate in library meetings, training sessions and other college academic activities;
  • May include some weekend and evening hours;
  • Perform other essential special assignments as requested by the Library Director.

  • Knowledge of instructional theories and ability to teach library classes in a physical and online environment;
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles in an online environment;
  • Experience with concepts and goals of information literacy;
  • Experience in creating instructional and information materials such as online tutorials, surveys, and guides;
  • Demonstrated understanding of information needs of community college students;
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies as they relate to information literacy and library services;
  • Experience with library reference and search services;
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills;

Ergonomic Requirements
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught at the main campus or at other campus centers, and classes taught online or as online/face-to-face hybrids. It is possible that up to 50% of assigned duties may be at the COCC branch campuses in Redmond, Madras and Prineville. All individuals are required to be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education
  • Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution.

Experience
  • One year of experience in library instructional planning and assessment, which includes coursework or experience in library instruction.
