Virtual Prototype Design information

What is the difference between Virtual Prototype Design vs CAD Designer?

AspectVirtual Prototype DesignCAD Designer
Primary FocusCreating digital, functional prototypes of products or systemsDeveloping detailed 2D/3D technical drawings and models
Tools & SoftwareSimulation software, 3D modeling, virtual testing toolsCAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA
Work EnvironmentProduct development teams, engineering labs, virtual simulation platformsDesign offices, engineering departments, manufacturing firms
Required CredentialsEngineering background, CAD knowledge, simulation skillsDesign or engineering degree, CAD certification

Virtual Prototype Design focuses on creating digital, functional models for testing and validation, often using simulation tools. CAD Designers primarily develop detailed technical drawings and 3D models for manufacturing. While both roles require CAD skills and engineering knowledge, Virtual Prototype Design emphasizes virtual testing and simulation, whereas CAD Design centers on detailed documentation and design creation.

What are some VR jobs?

Virtual Prototype Design jobs include roles such as VR environment artists, 3D modelers, and UX designers who create immersive virtual prototypes for testing and visualization. These positions often require skills in 3D modeling software, VR hardware, and understanding of user experience principles. They are commonly found in industries like gaming, automotive, architecture, and product development.

What are the 4 types of prototypes?

In virtual prototype design, the four main types of prototypes are low-fidelity prototypes, which are simple and quick to create; high-fidelity prototypes, which closely resemble the final product; functional prototypes, which demonstrate specific features or functions; and visual prototypes, which focus on the appearance and user interface. These types help designers test concepts, gather feedback, and refine designs efficiently.

What is virtual prototyping?

Virtual prototyping involves creating digital models of products or systems to simulate their design, function, and performance before physical production. Professionals in this field use computer-aided design (CAD) software and simulation tools to identify issues early, reduce costs, and improve product development efficiency.

What jobs can DT get you?

A Virtual Prototype Design role involves creating digital models of products using CAD software and 3D modeling tools. It prepares individuals for careers in product development, engineering, and design, often requiring skills in software like SolidWorks or Autodesk. These jobs typically involve collaboration with engineers and designers to refine concepts before physical production.

Job description

The Nevada Automotive Test Center (NATC) is currently seeking talented candidates for a Senior Automotive Engineer role at our Silver Springs, NV location. At NATC, our senior automotive engineers work directly with a team intent on designing, manufacturing, and testing innovative automotive mobility solutions. Founded in 1957, the NATC is a privately owned, independent test, evaluation, design and engineering facility offering development and certification testing to customers worldwide.

We have substantial international experience, which allows us to evaluate products intended for global markets knowledgeably and objectively. NATC has compiled an extensive database of worldwide operational and infrastructure conditions allowing accurate definition of user duty cycles and creation of test programs that are representative of service environments around the world. NATC is a leading innovator in translating real-world conditions into validated virtual proving ground simulation and virtual prototyping.

NATCs location in the great basin of Nevada allows our team to access terrain that can represent 85% of the world within a 150 mile radius, providing an excellent test bed for off-road mobility. NATCs operational area includes 1200 sq. miles of natural terrain, that when coupled with 6,200 acres of privately owned test courses, create an unparalleled testing area available to our engineers to innovate and solve our customers problems.

Position Summary : The Automotive Engineer - Senior is specifically tasked with performance and durability testing for ultra-light to heavy vehicle platforms, and on occasion also supports vehicle development projects for designing and building technology demonstrators aimed at meeting customer provided requirements. The selected candidates objective for this position is to assist in creating innovative solutions for a prototype vehicle platform, as well as executing test programs on vehicle systems and subsystems. The Automotive Engineer - Senior reports to the supervising Program Manager (PM), and in their absence assumes a leadership role facilitating the successful completion of projects.

Essential Functions : Prepares and reviews test plans identifying type of test to be conducted, facilities required, proposed schedule, resource allocation, etc. Modifies standardized test procedures or develops new test procedures as needed to fit the customers need. Directs and supervises junior engineers, mechanics, technicians, equipment operators and other personnel associated with projects in order to complete test programs on time and on budget.

Completes complex tests on vehicles and components to define holistic vehicle performance characteristics. Supports FMEA on failures encountered and suggests modifications and design change to components or systems. Key customer interface for assigned projects and RDT&E activities.

Prepares and reviews technical proposals making recommendations as to the feasibility of designs, time and cost estimates. Communicates project status, test results, and technical recommendations to other engineers and customers by leading meetings and briefings. Relates well with employees and customers at all levels and at all times in a professional and personable manner.

Secondary Functions : Generates new business through customer contacts and follow-up. Attends and represents company at trade and industry shows. Assists in special projects.

Provides recommendations for vehicle performance requirements, technical solutions, etc. to management and customers. Analyzes all technical data including instrumentation, engineering drawings, and vehicle performance requirements.

Oversees changes in existing facilities or equipment or develops new capabilities as needed. $82k-100k
