What is a virtual project manager?

As a virtual project manager, you take control of a geographically dispersed team to accomplish a goal. Your job is to lead every worker on the team, set deliverable timelines for a project, and keep everyone on the same wavelength. A virtual project manager must have impeccable organizational skills because team members are frequently scattered across time zones. You also have excellent interpersonal skills and are skilled with VoIP and other technologies that facilitate communication. A virtual PM manages an entire project, in contrast to a virtual assistant who does specific tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual project manager?

To thrive as a Virtual Project Manager, you need strong project management knowledge, organizational ability, and experience with remote team coordination, often supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum are commonly required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and time management skills are vital for motivating remote teams and ensuring project alignment. These skills and qualifications are crucial for driving project success, overcoming remote collaboration challenges, and delivering results on time and within scope.

What are some common challenges virtual project managers face when coordinating remote teams, and how can they be addressed?

Virtual Project Managers often encounter challenges such as time zone differences, communication barriers, and maintaining team engagement. To address these, they typically implement clear communication protocols, utilize collaborative project management tools, and schedule regular virtual check-ins to ensure everyone stays aligned. Building a strong team culture and fostering transparency also help in overcoming potential misunderstandings and keeping projects on track.

What is the difference between Virtual Project Manager vs Virtual Assistant?

The main difference is that a Virtual Project Manager oversees project execution, manages teams, and ensures project goals are met, often requiring project management certifications. A Virtual Assistant handles administrative tasks, scheduling, and support functions without the need for specialized project management credentials. Both roles are vital in remote work environments but serve different operational purposes.

Is it possible to work remotely as a virtual project manager?

Yes, virtual project managers can work remotely, as the role primarily involves coordinating teams, managing projects, and using online tools like project management software. Many companies offer remote positions for project managers, requiring strong communication skills and familiarity with digital collaboration platforms. Flexibility in schedule and location is common in remote project management roles.

Scientific Director, Oncology - Clinical Communications

As a Scientific Director in Clinical Communications, you will own the scientific vision for a portfolio of oncology education programs - translating complex clinical data into compelling content for live events and sponsored video content. This is a senior-level role for a clinician who thrives at the intersection of science and strategy. In this role, you will serve as the primary scientific lead across oncology accounts simultaneously, spanning multiple therapeutic areas, with direct accountability for content quality and client relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Identify client needs and provide strategic recommendations for the development of accurate, high-quality scientific content for digital, sponsored video programming, and live/virtual meeting deliverables targeting oncology healthcare professionals.
  • Analyze and apply relevant clinical literature, treatment guidelines, and disease state data to develop content across oncology therapeutic areas.
  • Lead project materials through pharmaceutical promotional review processes, ensuring compliance with submission requirements and revising content as needed throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Mentor and develop Medical Writers and Editors, providing clear direction and guidance on scientific writing best practices, workload prioritization, and quality standards.
  • Attend live events including professional conferences and advisory boards to synthesize and document clinical insights in real time, translating findings into actionable deliverables for clients and stakeholders. Travel expectation is approximately 3-5 days per quarter.
  • Contribute to business development efforts as a scientific subject matter expert, working alongside client services to help identify program opportunities and inform proposals, scopes of work, and project planning.
  • Collaborate within a cross-functional team that includes project management, editorial, and design services.
  • Support the professional development of PharmD students on APPE rotations, providing structured mentorship and hands-on exposure to medical communications practice; typically 1-2 students per year.

Qualifications

  • Clinical degree (PharmD, MD, DO) or advanced degree (MS, PhD) in a health sciences or life sciences field
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a medical communications or agency setting required; 5+ years preferred for candidates expected to independently manage client relationships and lead junior staff from day one. Candidates with fewer years of experience but exceptional oncology expertise will be considered.
  • Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) designation is highly valued in this role.
  • Demonstrated oncology expertise with the ability to engage credibly with KOLs and pharmaceutical clients on complex therapeutic topics.
  • Management or mentorship experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously.

Compensation Range:
$130,000 - $140,000 per year, depending on qualifications. Eligible for annual company bonus program or commission incentive based on role. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for this position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills, and professional experience.

Benefits Overview:

  • Health insurance through Cigna (medical & dental)
  • Vision coverage through VSP
  • Pharmacy benefits through OptumRx
  • FSA, HSA, Dependent Care FSA, and Limited Purpose FSA options
