Status: Full time, (4) 9.5 hour work day schedule. No weekends.

Pay: $28.00 - $37.00 per hour. Pay will be determined based on licensure, qualifications, and relevant experience.


Our practice, Dermatology Associates of Rochester, located in Rochester NY, is a fast-moving, high-performing, multi-discipline practice with Dermatology, Allergy/Immunology, Mohs Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and a Cosmetic Center. Our experienced Board-Certified dermatologists, allergists, Mohs surgeon, plastic surgeons, skin care specialists, estheticians, and researchers are dedicated to bringing an unmatched level of Total Skin Care, offering some of the most advanced skin treatments available, in a Boutique setting.


Job Summary

The Mohs Surgery Nurse is a key member of the clinical team. This new position provides specialized nursing care for patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery and other dermatologic surgical procedures. Working closely with the Mohs surgeon and clinical team, the Mohs Surgery Nurse helps ensure exceptional patient care before, during, and after surgery while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, efficiency, and clinical excellence.


When Mohs surgical volume allows, the Mohs Surgery Nurse may support other areas of the medical dermatology practice consistent with their education, licensure, competencies, and scope of practice.

Requirements:

Patient Care

  • Educate patients regarding surgical procedures, expectations, wound care, medications, and post-operative instructions.
  • Prepare patients for Mohs surgery by reviewing medical history, medications, allergies, and obtaining appropriate clinical information.
  • Obtain and document vital signs and other pertinent patient information. Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures, recognizing and reporting changes in patient condition.
  • Provide compassionate care and emotional support throughout the surgical experience.
  • Perform post-operative assessments and assist with follow-up care, including dressing changes and suture removal, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians and clinical staff to provide outstanding patient care.

Surgical Support

  • Prepare, organize, and maintain surgical instruments, supplies, medications, and equipment.
  • Prepare procedure rooms and maintain sterile surgical technique.
  • Assist the Mohs surgeon during surgical procedures and reconstructions.
  • Administer medications and treatments as permitted by licensure, provider orders, and New York State scope of practice.
  • Apply surgical dressings and assist with wound closure and post-operative bandaging.
  • Anticipate physician needs to promote efficient surgical flow and patient care.

Clinical Coordination

  • Verify informed consent and ensure required documentation is complete.
  • Coordinate patient scheduling, pathology communication, laboratory results, and referrals as needed.
  • Collaborate with providers, medical assistants, and administrative staff to ensure continuity of care.

Infection Prevention & Safety

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, CDC, HIPAA, and practice infection prevention standards.
  • Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and handling of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain emergency supplies and ensure procedure rooms are appropriately stocked.

Documentation

  • Document patient assessments, procedures, medications, patient education, and follow-up care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record and AI patient information systems.
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements and practice policies.

Team Responsibilities

  • Participate in staff meetings, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives.


Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Current NYS Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing is required.
  • Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience in an outpatient, procedural, surgical, or dermatology setting required.
  • Excellent clinical judgment, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care throughout the surgical experience is a must.
  • Previous experience in Mohs surgery, dermatology, outpatient surgery, plastic surgery, or another procedural specialty is highly preferred.
  • Experience with sterile surgical technique and assisting with office-based procedures required.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique, infection prevention, and wound healing principles required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, and positioning of equipment and patients (up to 50 pounds).
  • Manual dexterity necessary to assist with delicate surgical procedures.
  • Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • This position is performed in a busy outpatient multi-disciplinary dermatology and Mohs surgery practice. Employees routinely work in procedure rooms and clinical treatment areas with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other occupational hazards common to healthcare settings.
