Anesthesia Pain Coder Professional Fee

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Anesthesia Pain Coder, you will apply your senior-level expertise to meticulously code anesthesia and pain services, ensuring accuracy and compliance in a highly specialized field.

Every day you will review documentation to assign appropriate CPT/ASA codes, consulting the CPT-4/ASA manual and established criteria. You will also collaborate with clinic supervisors, providers, and the Revenue Management team to resolve complex coding issues and questions, adhering strictly to applicable payer rules and guidelines.

To be successful in this role, you will possess at least three years of recent experience in anesthesia and pain coding, exceptional attention to detail, a deep understanding of CPT/ASA coding principles and payer rules, and strong communication skills to effectively resolve coding challenges.

  • Assigns appropriate CPT/ASA codes using the CPT4/ASA manual and criteria, and ICD10CM diagnosis codes to anesthesia visits.
  • Determines time units, total units, and proper use of modifiers commonly used in anesthesia cases based on patient record documentation.
  • Understands, retains, and researches coding and billing rules, regulations, and requirements, including reasons for actions on edits.
  • Critically reviews all information to recognize errors or problems in coding, and runs concurrency reports for anesthesia time discrepancies, escalating complex overlaps.
  • Maintains assigned work queues and coding assignments within defined processing timeframes, submitting appropriate queries to providers for clarification when needed.
  • Follows established protocols to promote departmental efficiencies and timely filing of claims, possessing advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, terminology, and coding guidelines.

Job Requirements

Required

  • High School Diploma/G.E.D.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of recent experience in anesthesia and pain coding
  • Knowledge of anesthesia coding and elements related to anesthesia claims, such as units of time and anesthesia modifiers
  • Understand rules and regulations governing Medicare billing of anesthesia and pain services
  • Knowledge of NCCI, ICD10CM, CPT, and modifiers pertaining to anesthesia and pain services
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology
  • Epic experience
  • CPC or CCS or CCSP upon hire, Source: AAPC/AHIMA
  • Certified Anesthesia and Pain Management Coder (CANPC) certification within one (1) year of hire
