What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine (VM) is a software-based simulation of a physical computer that runs an operating system and applications just like a real computer. VMs allow you to run multiple operating systems on a single physical machine, isolating each environment for security and flexibility. They are commonly used for software development, testing, server consolidation, and running legacy applications. Virtual machines are managed by a hypervisor, which allocates resources and ensures separation between VMs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual machine engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Machine Engineer, you need expertise in virtualization technologies, operating systems, and system architecture, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, and tools like vSphere or VirtualBox, along with relevant certifications like VCP or RHCE, is highly valuable. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex environments and collaborating with IT teams. These skills ensure reliable deployment, maintenance, and optimization of virtual infrastructures, which are critical for modern business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by virtual machine administrators, and how can they be addressed?

Virtual Machine administrators often encounter challenges such as resource allocation conflicts, performance bottlenecks, and ensuring security across multiple virtual environments. Addressing these issues typically involves careful monitoring of resource usage, implementing automation for scaling, and staying up-to-date with security patches. Collaboration with network and storage teams is also essential to maintain optimal performance and prevent downtime.

What is the difference between Virtual Machine vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectVirtual MachineCloud Engineer
Required CredentialsIT certifications, virtualization knowledgeCloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure), programming skills
Work EnvironmentData centers, local servers, virtualization platformsCloud platforms, remote environments, development tools
Employer & Industry UsageIT departments, data centers, hosting providersTech companies, startups, enterprises adopting cloud solutions
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding virtualization technologyCloud infrastructure and deployment strategies

While Virtual Machines focus on creating virtualized hardware environments within physical servers, Cloud Engineers design, implement, and manage cloud-based infrastructure and services. Both roles require technical expertise, but Virtual Machines are a component used within cloud environments managed by Cloud Engineers. Understanding both helps organizations optimize their IT infrastructure effectively.

Job description

Department Description:
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Compute delivers secure, high-performance Virtual Machines for customers worldwide. The Virtual Machine Dataplane team builds and operates the core virtualization and host-side systems that power OCI VMs at scale. We work deeply in Oracle Linux and the virtualization stack (QEMU/KVM), focusing on performance, reliability, security isolation, and operational excellence in a multi-tenant cloud.
Position Overview:
We're looking for hands-on engineers with deep systems expertise and a passion for building reliable virtualization platforms. As an ideal candidate, you will have designed and implemented large-scale services and/or low-level systems in a distributed cloud environment. You will combine strong Linux fundamentals with software engineering skills to build, troubleshoot, and evolve critical dataplane components. You will champion best practices in engineering, testing, security, and operations to deliver scalable, highly available VM infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Core Infrastructure Engineer, you will own software design and development for major components of OCI's Virtual Machine dataplane. You should be a rock-solid engineer who can dive deep into any part of the stack-Linux kernel/userspace, virtualization layers, host networking/storage integration, and distributed control interactions. You value simplicity and scale, and work comfortably in a collaborative, agile environment.
Candidate Profile
Experience
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3-5+ years delivering and operating large-scale, highly available systems (cloud, virtualization platforms, or systems software).
  • Strong knowledge of Java or C/C++ and/or Go , plus scripting (Python/Bash/Perl).
  • Strong knowledge of operating systems, data structures/algorithms, concurrency, and distributed systems fundamentals.
  • Results-driven; thrives in an agile, collaborative environment, including ambiguity and fast iteration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to explain complex technical topics clearly.

Systems Fundamentals
  • Strong Linux/Unix fundamentals (processes, memory, filesystems, cgroups/namespaces, debugging).
  • Working familiarity with networking (TCP/IP, routing, DNS, HTTP) and standard architectures.
  • Understanding of storage systems (block/storage stacks, performance, persistence) and distributed persistence concepts.

Technologies (desired)
  • Virtualization experience (strong plus): QEMU/KVM, libvirt, virtio, VM lifecycle, snapshots, live migration concepts, CPU/memory performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with host/kernel observability and debugging tools (perf, ftrace, eBPF, gdb, strace).
  • Experience with CI/CD, build automation, testing frameworks; focus on regression prevention and reliability.
  • Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills across Linux + virtualization stacks.
  • Experience with multi-tenant isolation and security (hardening, attack surface reduction) is a plus.
  • Experience integrating with hardware/firmware features (NUMA, SR-IOV, CPU features, accelerators) is a plus.

Top 3 skill sets/technologies in the ideal candidate:
  1. Systems/software engineering in large-scale environments (Linux + distributed systems fundamentals)
  2. 3-5+ years owning complex components end-to-end with strong debugging/troubleshooting skills
  3. Virtualization expertise (QEMU/KVM, Oracle Linux, performance/reliability/security) and cloud experience
