Job Title: NOC Specialist
Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
The After-Hours Network Operations Center (NOC) Specialist is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and supporting the organization's enterprise infrastructure during non-business hours. This role serves as the primary operational resource for infrastructure monitoring, incident response, scheduled maintenance, patch management, backup operations, and system health verification. The NOC Specialist ensures the availability, performance, and security of the organization's production environment by proactively monitoring enterprise systems, responding to alerts, executing approved maintenance activities, validating backup operations, and escalating critical issues when necessary.
This position requires the ability to work independently while following established operational procedures and communicating effectively during production incidents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Infrastructure Monitoring
  • Monitor enterprise servers, virtualization platforms, storage systems, and network infrastructure.
  • Respond to system, application, and environmental alerts.
  • Perform routine infrastructure health checks throughout each shift.
  • Identify performance issues before they become production outages.
  • Monitor system capacity, hardware health, and resource utilization.

Incident Response & Troubleshooting
  • Serve as the first responder for after-hours production incidents.
  • Troubleshoot server, virtualization, storage, backup, and network issues.
  • Restore services when possible using documented procedures.
  • Escalate incidents to Infrastructure Engineering or vendors according to established procedures.
  • Document incident timelines, actions taken, and resolutions.

Patch Management
  • Execute scheduled operating system and infrastructure patching during approved maintenance windows.
  • Deploy Windows and Linux operating system updates using enterprise patch management tools.
  • Coordinate VMware ESXi and vCenter patching activities under established maintenance procedures.
  • Validate successful installation of updates and system availability following maintenance.
  • Identify and report failed patch deployments.
  • Maintain patch compliance documentation and maintenance records.
  • Assist with firmware updates for servers, storage, and infrastructure equipment as directed.

Backup Administration
  • Monitor nightly backup jobs and backup infrastructure.
  • Investigate and resolve backup failures.
  • Verify successful completion of backup and replication jobs.
  • Perform authorized file-level and virtual machine restores.
  • Validate backup integrity through periodic recovery testing.
  • Monitor backup repository capacity and storage utilization.
  • Escalate issues affecting backup success or recoverability.
  • Maintain backup documentation and operational logs.

VMware Administration
  • Monitor VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi hosts and vCenter.
  • Investigate host, cluster, datastore, and virtual machine alerts.
  • Monitor HA, DRS, and vMotion events.
  • Restart virtual machines and services when appropriate.
  • Validate virtual infrastructure health following maintenance activities.
  • Assist with planned infrastructure upgrades and maintenance.

Storage Administration
  • Monitor enterprise storage platforms, including Pure Storage FlashArray and TrueNAS.
  • Respond to storage performance, capacity, and hardware alerts.
  • Monitor snapshots, replication, and storage availability.
  • Verify storage health following maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate with vendors during hardware incidents when required.

Server Administration
  • Monitor Windows and Linux server health.
  • Review system logs and event logs for critical issues.
  • Restart services and perform approved corrective actions.
  • Verify system availability following maintenance or incident resolution.
  • Monitor Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and other critical infrastructure services.

Network Operations
  • Monitor network connectivity, switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, and WAN circuits.
  • Respond to network outages and connectivity issues.
  • Escalate ISP or carrier-related incidents.
  • Verify network availability after maintenance activities.

Maintenance & Change Management
  • Execute approved change requests during after-hours maintenance windows.
  • Validate successful completion of maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate maintenance with infrastructure engineers and vendors.
  • Perform post-maintenance health checks.
  • Ensure production systems are fully operational before closing maintenance activities.

Documentation & Communication
  • Maintain accurate incident tickets and operational logs.
  • Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions.
  • Complete detailed shift turnover reports.
  • Update operational runbooks and knowledge base documentation.

Communicate system status and major incidents to appropriate stakeholders.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2-5 years of experience supporting enterprise IT infrastructure or Network Operations Center (NOC) environments.
  • Experience working in a 24x7 operations environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound operational decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
