Description
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Rowan College at Burlington County is looking for individuals interested in tutoring our diverse population of students. Tutors will provide small-group and individual tutorial assistance for existing course curriculum. Tutors also aid in the development of students' self-esteem, learning, study strategies, and critical thinking skills. Tutors will work with students to identify their areas of strength and to help students take accountability for their educational choices and actions.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Tutoring includes, but is not limited to, reviewing class materials, assisting with written assignments, discussing texts, or working on solutions to problems in Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities, or Social Sciences. Tutoring is designed to supplement regular classroom instruction, so tutors must be knowledgeable about the content of specific subjects to assist students in increasing their academic skills and understanding. Tutor responsibilities include the following:
  • Supporting students by assisting with understanding course content and completing course assignments
  • Assisting with in-class and Tutoring Center activities
  • Providing students with individualized tutoring in a group or 1-on-1 setting
  • Facilitating study groups, workshops, and content review sessions
  • Promoting the development of academic skills and learning
  • Addressing inquiries related to course materials including Blackboard and ALEKS course sites, assignment due dates, and other course requirements
  • Monitoring and engaging with online discussion boards
  • Communicating with students who have missed sessions or who may experience academic difficulties
  • Providing tutorial support for the Embedded Tutoring program, including assisting in class and during supplemental instruction, as assigned
  • Recording and maintaining assessment data for the Embedded Tutoring program

OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The primary and most important overall responsibility of all employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students and other members of the College community.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Required:
  • Tutor I ($16.50/hr): Associate's degree required. No experience in higher education or a tutoring environment required.
    Tutor II ($18.00/hr): Associate's degree plus at least 2 years of experience in higher education or a tutoring environment required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
    Tutor III ($19.00/hr): Bachelor's degree plus at least 2 years of experience in higher education or a tutoring environment required. Master's degree or above preferred.
    Tutor IV ($20.00/hr): Doctoral degree plus at least 2 years of experience in higher education or a tutoring environment required.
Experience Required:
  • Tutor I ($16.50/hr): Associate's degree required. No experience in higher education or a tutoring environment required.
    Tutor II ($18.00/hr): Associate's degree plus at least 2 years of experience in higher education or a tutoring environment required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
    Tutor III ($19.00/hr): Bachelor's degree plus at least 2 years of experience in higher education or a tutoring environment required. Master's degree or above preferred.

Other requirements include strong communication and interpersonal skills, proficiency in subject matter, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, familiarity with academic support strategies, and basic computer literacy for virtual or hybrid tutoring environments.
