What is virtual design?

Virtual design refers to the process of creating and visualizing digital models, environments, or products using specialized software and technology. Professionals in virtual design use tools like 3D modeling, CAD, and virtual reality to simulate designs before they are built or manufactured. This approach allows for efficient collaboration, error reduction, and improved creativity in fields such as architecture, engineering, and product development. Virtual design is increasingly important as industries seek to streamline workflows and enhance visualization capabilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual designer?

To thrive as a Virtual Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, 3D modeling, and digital visualization, often supported by a degree in design, architecture, or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard tools such as Autodesk Revit, SketchUp, Blender, or Adobe Creative Suite is typically required. Strong creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help Virtual Designers translate ideas into immersive digital experiences and collaborate with clients or teams. These skills are crucial for delivering visually compelling, accurate designs that meet project goals and client expectations in a highly technical and collaborative environment.

How does a virtual design professional typically collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams?

Virtual Design professionals often serve as a bridge between architects, engineers, and construction teams by creating and managing digital models that facilitate clear communication and coordination. They use tools like BIM (Building Information Modeling) to integrate input from various stakeholders, identify potential design clashes, and streamline workflows. Regular meetings and model-sharing sessions are common, ensuring that everyone is aligned and that updates are made efficiently. This collaborative approach helps minimize errors, optimize project timelines, and deliver higher-quality results.

What is a virtual designer?

A virtual designer is a professional who creates digital designs and visual concepts using computer software, often working remotely. They typically use tools like CAD, Adobe Creative Suite, or 3D modeling programs and may collaborate with clients or teams online to develop projects across various industries such as fashion, interior design, or product development.

Job description

Who we are
We're The Beck Group, the largest and most innovative integrated building firm in the country. We are focused on delivering design and construction excellence on a broad range of project types. Headquartered in downtown Dallas, with offices in Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Worth, Mexico City, and Tampa, we believe a better process and outcome results from working together. At Beck, you will find yourself surrounded by passionate colleagues who have a collaborative mindset and care about each other. We are committed to hiring the best and brightest within our industry, and that's why we are seeking experienced professionals like you to help transform the industry and continue building Beck's respected reputation.
What you bring to the table
This position is part of Beck's Virtual Building Group. The VDC Engineer (Trade Code: VBG1) will be responsible for training and implementing Beck's Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) methodologies on multiple construction and design projects. Primary areas of focus are trade coordination, model analysis for project teams, model creation for project needs, and leveraging Beck's integrated workflows.
A successful applicant is someone who has a high-level understanding of BIM principles as well as a strong understanding of construction industry practices. The candidate should have confidence in the ability to visualize in 3D space - primarily as it relates to building structures, building envelopes, and building systems.
In this position you will execute the following responsibilities while reporting to the corporate (Dallas) VDC Managers:
  • Understand, promote, and implement VDC standards, processes, and technologies.
  • Participate in ongoing collaboration among VDC personnel including the sharing of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Participation in the process of creating project-specific BIM Execution plans and lead the BIM implementation as defined by the plan.
  • Generate and/or manage models for 3D trade coordination using Navisworks.
  • Execute construction coordination utilizing the Navisworks clash detective. A successful candidate should be willing to look at all the building components holistically and understand what solutions are viable in the field. As an integrated (design-build) firm we emphasize the protection of design intent.
  • Lead the MEPFP coordination process (including running meetings) using the company's workflow. We don't believe in two-hour-long coordination meetings or file management being a time commitment in this position; therefore, we utilize Autodesk Docs, Autodesk Glue, and Procore BIM to streamline the process. This takes a once/twice a week process and turns it into an automated revolving door leaving you to intellectually stimulating work that will actually be enjoyed.
  • Perform constructability reviews and assist project teams with model reviews.
  • Basic modeling in Revit to support project teams. Ex: Ceiling grids, existing systems from a laser scan.
  • Produce slab penetration drawings for field use.
  • Manage and use other tools to facilitate project coordination, scheduling, programming, and collaboration platforms: Autodesk products (we have an enterprise suite, so play to your heart's desire), Bluebeam, Procore (including the BIM Suite), Sketchup, etc.
  • Provide internal training to design and construction teams.
  • Have a desire to tinker with research and development.
  • Conduct yourself professionally but don't be afraid to have fun with your co-workers. We are an energetic bunch.

VDC (Virtual Building Group) Career Ladder at Beck:
While we do consider our group's career ladder to be a bit more "fluid," the following hierarchy has been established:
  • National VDC Manager (VBG5)
  • Regional VDC Manager (VBG4)
  • VDC Manager (VBG3)
  • VDC Engineer 2 (VBG2)
  • VDC Engineer 1 (VBG1) <- This Position
  • VDC Engineer Intern (Intern-VBG)

Who we think will be a great fit
We are looking for someone with proficient knowledge of the VDC world. This individual should be comfortable implementing and executing standard practices on jobs ranging from 10 to 300 million dollars. An ideal candidate is someone who will bring personal experiences to the table but follow the company's established means and methods.
You also meet the following requirements:
Basic Requirements:
  • 4-year degree (or no college experience may be considered given appropriate work experience.)
  • 0-2 years of AEC industry experience. Internships/Co-Ops/Field experience included.
  • Core understanding of building systems, construction methods, installation procedures, and sequencing.
  • Entry-level proficiency with the Autodesk suite (particularly Navisworks and Revit) is required.
  • Interest in advancing construction coordination & management practices through the use of available tools and technology.
  • Proactively pursues personal development to remain proficient in the latest BIM technologies and programs.
  • Builds effective relationships with others that reflect and support company core values.
  • Ability to adjust communication approach and format to meet the needs of differing personalities, expectations, and types of clients and designers.
  • Ability to organize, format, and present to communicate progress, problems, or status in a clear, concise manner to the client, as well as members of the project and design teams.
  • Exhibits creativity in problem-solving and the development of new processes.
