What is a virtual call center?

A virtual call center is a customer service operation where agents work remotely rather than from a centralized physical location. These agents use internet-based software to handle inbound and outbound calls, as well as other customer interactions like emails or chats. Virtual call centers allow companies to employ staff from different locations, often improving flexibility and reducing overhead costs. They are commonly used in industries such as telecommunications, retail, and technical support.

What are virtual call center jobs?

Virtual call center jobs focus on providing phone service in a variety of fields. While many people associate them with telemarketing and customer service, companies also use virtual call centers for things like setting appointments. In this role, you may help manage inbound and outbound calls, coordinate with other employees to find solutions to customer issues, and provide additional assistance or answer customer questions as needed. Many virtual call centers focus on a specific field. For example, a company may provide financial services or remote healthcare through a virtual call center. Virtual call centers frequently allow you to work from home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual call center representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Call Center Representative, you need excellent verbal communication, active listening, problem-solving skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, call routing systems, and basic computer applications is essential for daily operations. Patience, professionalism, and adaptability help representatives handle diverse customer needs and high-pressure situations. These skills are crucial for delivering effective customer support, resolving issues efficiently, and maintaining a positive brand reputation remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by employees in a virtual call center, and how can they be managed?

One common challenge in a virtual call center is staying focused and motivated while working remotely, often in a home environment with potential distractions. Additionally, communicating effectively with team members and supervisors can be more difficult without face-to-face interaction. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to establish a dedicated, quiet workspace, use reliable communication tools, and participate in regular team meetings. Many companies also offer training and support resources to help employees remain connected and productive.

Associate Director of Visitor Experience & Ticketing

Spoleto Festival USA

Charleston, SC • On-site

$75K - $85K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Posted 9 days ago

Job description

Description:

Spoleto Festival USA is internationally recognized as America’s premier performing arts festival. For 17 days and nights each spring, Spoleto Festival USA fills Charleston’s historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces with performances in opera; theater; dance; and chamber, symphonic, choral, and jazz music. Spoleto Festival USA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

The Role

The Associate Director of Visitor Experience & Ticketing owns the guest, patron, and audience experience at Spoleto Festival USA, from the first call to the box office through the final curtain. For many patrons, this team is the first, the last, and sometimes the only interaction they have with the Festival, and this role sets the standard for what that interaction feels like.

This year-round, full-time role leads and motivates the ticketing and visitor experience team, sets the vision for ticketing and guest experience, and serves as the Festival’s subject matter expert on ticketing, box office, group sales, and front-of-house operations within Tessitura. The ideal candidate is both a strategic thinker and a hands-on leader: someone who can analyze patron data, manage budgets, and work alongside the team to build the systems, processes, and culture that deliver a top-of-class experience.

Position Type: Full-time, exempt, and benefit-eligible

Location: Charleston, SC (onsite)

Department: Box Office & Visitor Experience

Reports to: Director of Operations & People

What You’ll Do

  • Own the guest, patron, and audience experience across every channel: call center, box office and kiosks, online, and at Festival venues.
  • Set the strategy for ticketing, box office, and front-of-house operations as the Festival’s subject matter expert and a Tessitura super user, overseeing the build of 100+ performances a season and managing dynamic pricing.
  • Lead and motivate a team spanning full-time, seasonal, and volunteer staff, including House Managers, ticket agents, and apprentices, in partnership with department managers.
  • Drive attendance, retention, and earned revenue through smart ticketing strategy, accessible service, and strong cross-departmental partnerships.
  • Guide the team in building the systems, processes, and training that bring consistency to a fast-growing department.
  • Direct merchandise fulfillment and inventory management, and guide group sales and digital ticketing communications, including know-before-you-go messaging.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in box office, ticketing, or visitor experience, including leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Hands-on Tessitura experience strongly preferred, including building 100+ performances a season, seat maps, pricing, and packages.
  • A proactive, organized, process-driven approach; you build systems where none exist.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort managing budgets and revenue reporting.
  • Excellent communication and sound judgment handling sensitive patron, donor, and personnel matters.
  • Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to accessible seating, entry, and patron service.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Outlook, and comfort learning new systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; nonprofit arts or festival experience a plus.
Requirements:
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.; this employer participates in E-Verify.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires regular standing, walking between venues, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires evening, weekend, and holiday availability, with on-call hours during the Festival season (May–June).
  • Based on-site in Charleston, SC, with regular presence at Festival venues.

Compensation & BenefitsThe salary range for this position is $75,000–$85,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include:

  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan with Employer Match
  • Generous Time Off: Paid Vacation Days + Paid Office Closures (11 Holidays + 23 Office Closures)
  • Health Savings Account, Life & Disability Insurance, and an Employee Assistance Program
  • Complimentary Festival Performance Admission for Staff and Guest
