A Virtual BIM (Building Information Modeling) Specialist is a professional who uses digital tools and 3D modeling software to create and manage virtual representations of physical buildings and infrastructure. They collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams to coordinate design, construction, and facility management processes using BIM technology. Their work helps improve accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration throughout a project's lifecycle, reducing errors and saving costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual BIM specialist?

To thrive as a Virtual BIM (Building Information Modeling) Specialist, you need a strong background in architecture, engineering, or construction, combined with expertise in BIM processes and standards. Proficiency with software tools such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and BIM 360, along with relevant certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional, is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaborative skills set outstanding professionals apart in coordinating multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate digital modeling, efficient project collaboration, and successful delivery of complex construction projects.

Job description

Job Title: BIM / VDC Team Lead – Virtual Construction Services

Job Description

This role leads a growing Virtual Construction Services (VCS) team, overseeing BIM and VDC planning, execution, and coordination across multiple projects. You will manage staffing, tools, budgets, and schedules while mentoring a large team of virtual construction professionals and driving the adoption of innovative digital construction practices. The position combines hands-on technical work in Revit, AutoCAD, and related tools with leadership responsibilities, client-facing coordination, and continuous improvement of standards and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the VCS team by planning activities, assigning tasks, resolving challenges, and providing ongoing training and mentorship.
  • Maintain and regularly update staffing forecasts for the VCS group to ensure adequate resourcing across projects.
  • Develop, implement, and manage the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Execution Plan for assigned projects.
  • Research, evaluate, and adopt innovative virtual construction tools and technologies to enhance team performance and project outcomes.
  • Advocate for and integrate virtual construction practices across Pre-Construction and Operations teams, promoting consistent use of BIM and VDC workflows.
  • Create and manage budgets and schedules related to virtual construction project milestones to support timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture while supporting the growth and development of emerging team leads.
  • Ensure construction drawings are accurate, current, and compliant with quality and coordination standards.
  • Organize and manage shop drawings and related digital documentation to support field and project teams.
  • Oversee the completion of project detailing and project close-out activities related to virtual construction deliverables.
  • Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance as an essential function of the role.
  • Provide guidance and direction for a team of approximately 20–40 VCS professionals, with the ability to lead larger teams of 50–60 people when required.
  • Review and provide constructive feedback on team-generated drawings and models to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
  • Lead project turnover meetings to support smooth transitions between preconstruction, construction, and close-out phases.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to address coordination matters involving subcontractors and other stakeholders.
  • Support team accountability by monitoring progress and ensuring project deadlines and deliverables are met.
  • Assist in enforcing CAD/Revit standards for drawings and models in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Document standards, processes, and training materials, and support their implementation across the VCS team.
  • Train and onboard new employees on VCS standards, tools, and workflows.
  • Generate shop drawings for field use, using contract documents as a guideline, as needed for overflow or support work.
  • Plot, prepare, and check drawings for final review and submittal as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (2015 or newer), Fabrication CADmep, Revit, Navisworks, and Autodesk BIM 360 Glue.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing digital files, models, and project documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to use Adobe Acrobat and Bluebeam Revu for reviewing, marking up, and managing documents.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills in a multi-project environment.
  • Solid understanding of construction industry practices and workflows, particularly in relation to virtual construction.
  • Ability to identify and resolve design coordination challenges using BIM and VDC tools.
  • High attention to detail to minimize errors and mitigate project risks.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and focused on delivering results in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience managing Revit families utilized in templates to support consistent modeling standards.
  • Experience supporting Revizto model management for projects that require the use of this platform.
  • Experience setting up project models (NWF) in preparation for clash detection and coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams of over 50–60 people and operate effectively in a client-facing capacity.
  • At least 5–6 years of professional or educational experience using Revit.
  • At least 3–5 years of management experience leading technical or project teams.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record, as required for the role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of formal training in AutoCAD and/or Revit from a technical school or community college, or 5–10 years of relevant industry experience supported by references and work samples.
  • Experience in BIM and mechanical disciplines, with a strong understanding of virtual construction workflows.
  • Experience documenting and implementing CAD/BIM standards, including processes and training materials.
  • Experience training and onboarding new employees in VCS, BIM, or CAD standards and tools.
  • Experience generating and checking shop drawings for field use based on contract documents.
  • Strong communication skills for leading meetings, presenting to clients, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a detailed and technical work environment, delivering impactful, full-cycle project contributions.

Work Environment

The role typically requires working on-site in the office 3–4 days per week, with flexibility open for discussion. You will work in a collaborative, open culture that encourages questions and continuous learning, rather than a rigid hierarchy. The department is growing, with a strong focus on performance, safety, and client satisfaction, and offers opportunities for individual growth as the team expands. The environment emphasizes full-cycle, detailed, and technical work, with both internal and external projects providing sustainable, long-term opportunities. You will work daily with digital tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, Fabrication CADmep, Navisworks, Autodesk BIM 360 Glue, Revizto, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Bluebeam Revu in a modern office setting that supports virtual design and construction workflows.
