Job description

Team Red Dog is hiring a Senior Android SDET - Android Test Automation Engineer for our client, a Fortune 50 technology leader and AI-driven technology organization. This highly visible role supports Project Solara, Microsoft's next-generation chip-to-cloud platform for agent-first devices by building and maintaining automated test automation that validates software running on prototype Android hardware. You'll work directly with early reference devices, developing automated test suites, improving software quality, and preventing defects before release while collaborating with experienced Android engineers on an entirely new class of intelligent computing devices. This is an exceptional opportunity for experienced SDETs and software engineers with Android, AOSP, automation, and CI/CD expertise to help shape the quality of Microsoft's next generation of AI-powered hardware.
Top Required Skills (Must Haves):
  1. Software Engineering (5+ years) - Strong software development experience writing maintainable code in Kotlin, C++, or another strongly typed programming language while independently solving complex technical problems.
  2. Android Test Automation (1+ year) - Experience designing and maintaining automated tests that provision, configure, deploy, and validate software on physical Android or AOSP-based devices.
  3. Automation Frameworks & CI/CD - Experience integrating automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines while improving regression coverage, reliability, and release quality.
  4. Android Platform & Device Validation - Hands-on experience with Android/AOSP devices, including provisioning, software updates, debugging, log analysis, telemetry, and release validation.

Opportunity Overview:
Join the engineering team behind Project Solara, Microsoft's innovative agent-first device platform developed within the Applied Sciences Group. This role offers the unique opportunity to work directly with prototype Android hardware long before public release, building automation that validates software running on real devices while helping define the quality strategy for an entirely new computing platform. You'll collaborate with experienced software engineers and technical leaders in a highly innovative environment where your work directly influences product quality and release readiness.
How you will make an impact:
  • Develop, maintain, and expand automated test suites for Android applications and platform components.
  • Build automation that provisions, configures, deploys, and validates software across prototype Android devices.
  • Maintain and operate a physical Android device lab, including provisioning, software updates, connectivity, inventory management, and test readiness.
  • Partner with senior Android SDETs to improve automation frameworks and integrate testing into existing CI/CD pipelines.
  • Investigate automated test failures through log analysis, crash reports, telemetry, and device diagnostics.
  • Identify test coverage gaps and prioritize regression testing based on product changes and risk.
  • Reproduce software defects, validate fixes, and support release readiness across development builds.
  • Document testing procedures, quality metrics, and technical findings while collaborating closely with engineers, PMs, and project leadership.

The expertise you bring:
  • 5+ years of software engineering or Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) experience.
  • 1+ years of Android test automation experience on physical or prototype devices.
  • Experience working with Android, AOSP, or enterprise Android platforms.
  • Strong coding skills in Kotlin, C++, or another strongly typed programming language.
  • Experience building and maintaining automated testing frameworks.
  • Experience integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience troubleshooting software using logs, crash reports, telemetry, and debugging tools.
  • Experience provisioning and configuring Android devices for automated testing.
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, regression testing, and release validation.
  • Ability to independently drive technical work while collaborating effectively with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

What makes a candidate highly successful in this role:
The strongest candidates bring a solid software engineering foundation along with hands-on Android or AOSP automation experience on physical devices rather than emulator-only testing. They write clean, maintainable code, proactively improve automation reliability, quickly diagnose complex software issues, and comfortably work with prototype hardware in a fast-paced engineering environment. Successful engineers are equally effective working independently and collaborating across software engineering, program management, and quality teams to deliver reliable releases.
