What is a BIM specialist?

BIM specialists are professionals who use Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology to create and manage digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. They collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams to ensure accurate and efficient project planning, design, and execution. BIM specialists help streamline workflows, detect clashes, and improve communication throughout the lifecycle of a building project. Their expertise is essential for modern construction projects that prioritize efficiency, cost savings, and sustainability.

What are common challenges faced by BIM professionals when coordinating with multidisciplinary teams?

BIM professionals often encounter challenges when coordinating with architects, engineers, and contractors due to differences in design standards, software compatibility, and communication styles. Ensuring that all stakeholders use consistent data and modeling practices can be complex, especially on large projects. Effective collaboration requires clear documentation, regular coordination meetings, and strong problem-solving skills to address clashes or discrepancies in the models. Adapting to rapidly evolving BIM technologies and workflows is also a key part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BIM specialist?

To thrive as a BIM Specialist, you need expertise in architectural or engineering design, proficiency in BIM methodologies, and a relevant degree in construction, architecture, or engineering. Familiarity with BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD, as well as certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage complex project data. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, reduce errors, and support seamless collaboration throughout the building lifecycle.

Job description

BIM Manager

HMC Architects is an employee-owned design firm with an inherent desire to make a difference in our communities. As a purpose-driven brand based on values, our mission to design for good drives everything we do. And our ownership culture creates alignment and increased commitment to that mission, keeping us on track to being successful.

Founded with the purpose of anticipating community needs, HMC aims to create designs that have a positive impact, now and into the future. We focus primarily on opportunities to have the most direct contribution to communitiesโ€“through healthcare, education, and civic spaces.

As an employee owned company you become an owner after one yearโ€”receiving company-provided shares at no cost and building long-term financial growth as the firm succeeds. We also give back through our volunteerism with our Designing Futures Foundation, which advances sustainable and regenerative design and supports the next generation of innovators. In addition to this, we also support our team through:

  • Culture: We put people over profits, giving them the flexibility to manage their work and life. We believe in fairness, equality in opportunity, and rewarding those who perform.
  • Wellness: Company paid wellness courses, on-site gyms (at select locations), access to financial advisors and discounts to wellness platforms, gyms and more.
  • Professional Development: LinkedIn learning access, business development training, supportive mentorship, company-paid ARE study materials, exam fees, and licensure completion bonuses.
  • Comprehensive Comp and Benefits: Base+Bonus+Equity+401k, including student loan repayments, wellness programs, full medical, dental, vision, time off and holidays above industry standard.

The BIM Manager leads the planning, implementation, and execution of Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategies across project teams and studios. This role provides technical leadership, establishes and maintains BIM standards and workflows, ensures model quality and consistency, and supports teams through training, mentoring, and hands-on project engagement. The BIM Manager also oversees digital assets, cloud collaboration platforms, and technology initiatives to drive efficiency, innovation, and data-driven design throughout the firm.

This position will be working out of our Seattle, Washington office. This position is eligible for hybrid (office/remote) working arrangement and flexible working hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Support project teams through BIM execution planning, technical leadership, and ongoing model quality control.
  • Mentor and guide Project BIM Leads while ensuring consistent BIM standards, workflows, and project reliability across the studio/office.
  • Perform regular model audits, coordinate closely with consultants, and maintain high levels of interoperability across all project models.
  • Develop, curate, and manage digital assets, detail libraries, and custom content to strengthen project delivery.
  • Champion design and BIM technologies firmwide, advancing data-rich models to support automation, optimization, simulation, and emerging AI workflows.
  • Elevate metadata quality, promote best practices, and ensure strategic information management across all projects.
  • Manage software deployments, licensing, and cloud collaboration platforms, including Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).
  • Track and report metrics related to technology initiatives, software use, and ROI.
  • Design and deliver training programsโ€”from fundamentals to advanced workflowsโ€”supported by updated training materials and datasets.
  • Lead or contribute to R&D, technology pilots, evaluations of emerging tools, and implementation of new processes.
  • Partner with leadership and project teams across studios to identify and support BIM and technology engagement opportunities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, IT, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5โ€“8 years of AEC industry experience with strong understanding of all project phases.
  • Minimum 5 years managing BIM workflows across full project lifecycles.
  • Strong design and technical background with experience delivering effective training programs.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit, and BIM-related software; knowledge of the Revit API preferred.
  • Solid understanding of Navisworks, CAD platforms, and industry best practices; familiarity with Rhino, V-Ray, Adobe Creative Suite a plus.
  • Experience with tools such as Content Catalog (UNIFI), Guardian, Ideate Software, Clarity, and Dynamo.
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking abilities.
