What is a virtual behavioral technician?

A Virtual Behavioral Technician (VBT) provides remote support to individuals with behavioral challenges, often working under the supervision of a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). They assist with implementing behavior intervention plans, monitoring progress, and providing virtual reinforcement and guidance. Using video conferencing and other online tools, VBTs help clients develop skills in communication, social interaction, and daily living. This role is commonly found in telehealth services and is widely used in applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for individuals with autism and other developmental disorders.

What does a typical workday look like for a virtual behavioral technician?

As a Virtual Behavioral Technician, your day often involves leading remote ABA therapy sessions, implementing behavior intervention plans, and monitoring client progress through secure telehealth platforms. You'll regularly document sessions, track data, and communicate with supervising Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to discuss client goals or adjustments to treatment strategies. The majority of your interactions will be virtual, requiring a quiet workspace and reliable internet connection. Collaboration with families and caregivers is also key, as you may provide training or updates to support client success at home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the virtual behavioral technician position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Behavioral Technician, you need a background in applied behavior analysis (ABA), a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree in a related field, and certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) or similar. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, data collection software, and remote communication tools is highly beneficial.
