Job Summary:

Oregon State University Career Development Center is seeking an Assistant Director of Career Development. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Assistant Director of Career Development serves students in the College of Science (COS), one of the largest colleges at Oregon State University. The College enrolls undergraduate and graduate students across seven academic departments spanning the biological, mathematical and physical sciences, and serves a significant population of pre-health students and Ecampus learners.
In this role, the Assistant Director functions as an educator, strategist, relationship-builder, and communicator, supporting students' career development. This position provides leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating career education strategies and programs that are accessible and effective for students on campus and online.
The successful candidate demonstrates energy and enthusiasm for helping students succeed, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Program Development & Implementation
The Assistant Director develops, coordinates, and facilitates career development opportunities for students, with intentional consideration for the needs of both on-campus and online learners. Programs are designed to empower students to achieve their career goals, such as finding jobs and internships, securing undergraduate research and laboratory experiences, applying to graduate school, and pursuing professional and health programs in medical, dental, or pharmacy schools. Programming includes, but is not limited to, workshops, classroom and club presentations, panel discussions, networking events, and graduate and professional school information sessions. Programs are delivered through a mix of in-person, virtual, and asynchronous formats to ensure meaningful access and engagement for students across modalities.

Employer Engagement to Support Students' Career Outcomes The Assistant Director proactively builds and maintains relationships with employers across a variety of sectors, including life sciences and healthcare organizations, government agencies, research institutions, and nonprofits, and identifies meaningful ways to engage employers with the college in support of COS students' career development.

Employer engagement activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating employer and alumni webinars or virtual information sessions

  • Partnering with faculty to embed employer engagement into coursework and research experiences

  • Supporting college-led networking events or targeted recruitment activities

  • Organizing employer or alumni panels focused on career pathways and hiring opportunities

All employer engagement efforts are coordinated in close collaboration with the Career Development Center's External Relations team to ensure alignment with university's strategies and best practices.

Relationship-Building and Collaboration with Partners
The Assistant Director is responsible for ensuring that COS students have access to 1:1 consultations on career topics such as resume, CV, and cover letter preparation, interviewing, job and internship searching, graduate and professional school applications, personal statements, salary negotiation, career exploration, and decision-making.

The Assistant Director trains, hires, and supervises COS Career Assistants (student employees) to provide 1:1 career consultations to students in person and online.

The Assistant Director also provides 1:1 consultations for COS students in a limited capacity based on the complexity of support required and student worker staffing needs.

Assessment
The Assistant Director assesses the effectiveness and outcomes of career education strategies and programs for COS students on-campus and online. This includes evaluating access, participation, and outcomes, revising initiatives as needed, and coordinating assessment reporting to the Career Development Center and the college partner.

Additional Responsibilities
The Assistant Director participates in CDC staff activities, including staff meetings, workshops, career fairs, information sessions, on-campus recruiting, tabling, retreats, and other large-scale events. This position participates in the annual performance evaluation process and engages in ongoing professional development.
