The Opportunity
We're building something new for New York City's independent drivers - the people who keep the city moving but are often left out of traditional healthcare systems. Together with Independent Drivers Guild and Workers Benefit Fund (WBF), we launched the Worker Healthy Living Program (WHLP) - a lifestyle medicine-informed program designed to help drivers live healthier, longer lives through food, movement, sleep, stress management, and community.
Akido is seeking a Part-Time Medical Assistant (MA) to join our interdisciplinary care team delivering holistic, community-based care to underserved populations. This role sits at the heart of a new model of healthcare - combining clinical support, patient advocacy, and community engagement across in-person, virtual, and mobile settings.
You'll work closely with physicians, advanced practice clinicians, dietitians, health coaches, and social workers to support relationship-based care and lifestyle medicine programs focused on chronic disease prevention and management.
This isn't a traditional MA role. You'll help deliver care in community clinics, mobile settings, and digital environments while supporting program innovation, patient engagement, and new care delivery workflows.
This is a fast-paced, early-stage environment where you'll help test new ideas, improve patient experiences, and make a direct impact on people's lives.
What You'll Do
Clinical Support & Patient Care
  • Assist with patient scheduling, intake, registration, and collection of vitals.
  • Support providers with exams, procedures, and basic care within scope of practice.
  • Deliver a warm, welcoming, and dignified patient experience.
  • Provide follow-up support and help patients navigate care plans, appointments, and resources.
  • Maintain a safe, organized clinical environment and ensure supplies are stocked.

Patient Advocacy & Care Coordination
  • Act as a healthcare advocate, ensuring patients understand their care plans.
  • Support culturally responsive, relationship-based care delivery.
  • Collaborate with social workers, health navigators, and care team members to provide wraparound support.
  • Help build long-term relationships with patients and communities.

Program Support & Innovation
  • Use EHR systems, telehealth platforms, and digital tools to support care delivery.
  • Provide feedback on workflows, technology, and patient experience improvements.
  • Support group visits, lifestyle medicine programs, and community-based care initiatives.
  • Collect patient feedback and contribute to reporting and program improvement.

Community & Mobile Care
  • Travel across New York City to support care delivery in clinics, community sites, and mobile settings.
  • Participate in outreach and engagement efforts to build trust and awareness.
  • Support care delivery across in-person, virtual, and community-based environments.
Who You Are
Required

  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or equivalent certification.
  • Active New York State driver's license.
  • Up-to-date required vaccinations for healthcare personnel.
  • Fluent in conversational and medical Spanish.
  • Comfortable using EHR systems, telehealth platforms, and digital tools.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, flexible approach.
  • Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working in evolving environments.
Preferred
  • 2-3 years of experience in the medical field.
  • Additional clinical experience (EMT, CNA, nursing student, medical student, or clinical scribe).
  • Experience supporting underserved or community-based populations.
  • Experience with insurance workflows, reimbursement, or billing processes.
  • Interest in lifestyle medicine, preventive care, or community health.
Schedule
  • Part-time position
  • Flexible schedule based on program needs.
  • May include early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends.
Location & Work Environment
This is a hybrid role with travel across New York City. Work settings may include:
  • Clinic headquarters
  • Community organizations
  • Mobile clinics
  • Virtual care environments

Flexibility and comfort working across different environments is essential.
