What is video retouching?

Video retouching is the process of enhancing and correcting video footage to improve its visual quality. This can involve removing blemishes, smoothing skin tones, adjusting colors, eliminating unwanted objects, and refining details frame by frame. Skilled video retouchers use specialized software to ensure the final video looks polished and professional, often for use in film, television, advertising, or social media. The goal is to create visually appealing videos while maintaining a natural and realistic appearance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video retoucher?

To thrive as a Video Retoucher, you need a solid understanding of color grading, digital compositing, and visual effects, typically supported by experience in media production or a related degree. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, and Photoshop, as well as familiarity with codecs and rendering workflows, is essential. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication with clients and team members are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure high-quality, visually appealing video content that meets project specifications and client expectations.

What are some common challenges faced in a video retouching role and how can they be managed?

Video Retouching professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent color grading across multiple shots, meeting tight deadlines, and collaborating with directors or clients who have evolving creative visions. To manage these, effective communication and organization are key—keeping detailed notes and reference files helps ensure visual consistency, while regular check-ins with the creative team help align expectations. Additionally, staying updated with the latest software tools and industry best practices can make workflows more efficient and adaptable.

Job description

A typical day in this role may include reviewing and retouching photography, with a strong focus on color correction, image cleanup, and final image preparation. You will also organize and prepare files for delivery and upload to asset libraries, manage backups and archives, maintain studio equipment and inventory, and collaborate with Producers, Photographers, Videographers, and Editors on active projects. Depending on production needs, you may assist with shoot preparation, lighting and equipment setup, studio or on-location photography and video production, capture supporting content, or take on smaller assignments independently from production through post-production.

How You’ll Make an Impact:
  • Own high-quality image finishing: Apply strong retouching, color correction, and image cleanup skills to deliver polished, accurate, and on-brand visual assets.
  • Support the full production lifecycle: Contribute from pre-production and shoot preparation through studio or on-location production, post-production, delivery, and archiving.
  • Create order from complex media workflows: Manage, organize, format, label, back up, and upload photo and video assets across multiple platforms and libraries.
  • Be a flexible production partner: Collaborate closely with Producers, Photographers, Videographers, and Editors while stepping in to support projects and smaller assignments where needed.
  • Grow technical and creative capabilities: Take advantage of hands‑on opportunities to expand photography, videography, lighting, and post‑production skills while making an immediate impact through strong retouching expertise.
What You Bring:
  • Education: Technical degree, an Associate's degree and 3+ years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of experience.
  • Work Experience: Relevant hands‑on experience: 1–3 years of experience in photo retouching, photography, videography, or a related multimedia production environment.
  • Strong photo retouching and color skills: Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, with a strong eye for color, detail, consistency, and image quality.
  • Foundational production skills: Working knowledge of photography, videography, lighting, camera operation, and basic video editing, along with the ability to properly maintain and care for production equipment, including cleaning lenses, cameras, and other gear.
  • Asset and file management: Strong organizational skills and understanding of file formats, RAW workflows, file naming, backups, archiving, and asset management.
  • Collaborative and growth-oriented mindset: Ability to work effectively with Producers, Photographers, Videographers, and Editors, with a willingness to take direction, ask questions, adapt, and continue developing technical and creative skills.
