Video game testers often encounter challenges such as identifying and reproducing hard-to-find bugs, meeting tight project deadlines, and adapting to frequent changes in game builds. The role requires strong attention to detail and patience, as testers may need to repeat the same tasks or levels many times to ensure quality and consistency. Additionally, testers must communicate clearly with developers and other team members to document issues accurately and track their resolution.

What is the difference between Video Game Testers vs Quality Assurance (QA) Testers?

While both roles require attention to detail, Video Game Testers are more gameplay-oriented, whereas QA Testers focus on overall quality assurance processes.

How much does a games tester get paid?

Video game testers typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, with entry-level positions often paying around minimum wage and experienced testers earning higher rates. Salaries can vary based on location, experience, and the complexity of testing tasks, and some testers may work part-time or on contract basis while using testing tools and reporting bugs regularly.

What are video game testers?

Video game testers, sometimes called quality assurance (QA) testers, are professionals who play video games in development to identify bugs, glitches, and other issues before the games are released to the public. Their main responsibility is to ensure that the game is functioning as intended and is free of errors that could negatively impact the player experience. Testers document problems they find, reproduce them for developers, and often provide feedback on gameplay, usability, and overall quality. This role is essential for maintaining high standards in the final product.

How do you become a video game tester?

To become a video game tester, you typically need a strong interest in gaming, good attention to detail, and basic knowledge of gaming platforms and software. Many testers start with entry-level positions that require no formal education, and some companies look for familiarity with testing tools or bug-tracking software. Building experience through personal gaming, online testing opportunities, or related skills can improve chances of securing a testing role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Video Game Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Game Tester, you need sharp attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a basic understanding of game mechanics, often supported by familiarity with various gaming platforms. Experience with bug tracking systems like JIRA, test case management tools, and sometimes ISTQB certification are commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help testers clearly report issues and collaborate with developers. These skills are essential for identifying and documenting game defects, ensuring a polished and enjoyable player experience.

What qualifications do I need to be a game tester?

Video game testers typically need a strong understanding of gaming, good attention to detail, and basic computer skills. A high school diploma or equivalent is usually required, and familiarity with gaming platforms and troubleshooting can be beneficial. Some positions may also require knowledge of bug tracking software or testing procedures.

How much do video game testers make?

Video game testers typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $20,000 to $50,000 depending on experience, location, and whether they work full-time or part-time. Entry-level testers often start at the lower end of the pay scale, while experienced testers or those working for larger companies may earn higher wages and additional benefits.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.
As an Executive Producer for the Party and Puzzle Games Portfolio, you will be an operational leader in our game development process, driving strategic initiatives and ensuring excellence across a large portfolio of games. As strategic partner to the General Manager, you will work to turn the portfolio strategy into games for our players.
Drawing from deep experience in developing, operating, and publishing games, you will influence the portfolio, overall game strategy and deliver high-quality outcomes. Your role will involve managing a team of producers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement while delivering amazing game experiences to our players.
Responsibilities:
  • Executive Production: Accountable for portfolio-level production excellence. You will work with the General Manager to ensure successful execution of the GM's portfolio strategy. You will focus on quality, predictability, and performance of the titles in your portfolio while considering the overall Netflix Games goals.
  • Strategic Leadership: Influence and shape the overall games production strategy, leveraging your recognized industry expertise to drive the success of our portfolio.
  • People Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of producers, guiding them to deliver high quality games, while maintaining healthy team culture: collaborative, transparent, motivated, committed, and focused on realistic goals. You will draw on your experience to help identify risks and mitigate them.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Build bridges to connect with strategic partners, solving complex issues across wider cross-functional teams.
  • Game Expert: Subject matter expert in game development, helps ensure the game vision and feature choices align with player tastes. You should be player-focused and genuinely care about the player experience, including curiosity about player community and feedback
  • Strategic Initiative Ownership: Identify and drive initiatives central to the growing success of the team, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Game Champion: Serve as an internal advocate for your games, crafting and presenting product updates to various audiences, providing the right level of detail and visibility into milestones and challenges to stakeholders and partners

Qualifications:
  • 15+ years of experience in Video Game Production, with expertise in Development, Publishing and LiveOps. Deep toolkit of production processes, with the judgment to select and adapt the right tools to ever-changing requirements.
  • Proven success in managing large portfolios and delivering high-quality game production outcomes at various scales (from team-level to AAA) and running live games at scale to players all over the world
  • Experience in Party and Puzzle Games
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end game development processes, including design, programming, art, and audio.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively in an ever-evolving, fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of first-party (platform-holder) processes and requirements
  • Experience in managing co-dev and outsourcing partners
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying complex ideas and presenting to stakeholders at all levels. Skilled at stakeholder management
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills to assess progress and address development challenges. Uses data to help answer questions about the game, audience, and development process
  • Experienced at change management, balancing 'farming for dissent' against execution
  • Experience in managing project budgets and making cost-effective decisions without compromising quality.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance processes and coordinating testing to ensure high standards.
  • Able to manage project to quality while staying on schedule and budget
  • Strong leadership and management skills to motivate teams and maintain a positive, productive environment.
  • Up-to-date with industry trends, player preferences, and competitive landscape.
  • Openness to feedback and adaptability to changing project requirements.
  • Passion for gaming and understanding of various game genres and platforms.
