What is video captioning?

Video captioning is the process of transcribing spoken dialogue and relevant audio information from a video into text, which is then displayed on the screen as captions. This helps make video content accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing and can also benefit viewers in noisy environments or those who prefer reading along. Captions can be created manually or generated automatically using speech recognition software, and they often include not just spoken words but also important sounds and speaker identification.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in video captioning, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Captioning Specialist, you need excellent language proficiency, strong attention to detail, and a good understanding of grammar and punctuation, often supported by experience or training in transcription or captioning. Familiarity with captioning software such as Amara, Subtitle Edit, or Aegisub, as well as knowledge of captioning standards and accessibility guidelines, is typically required. Strong time management, adaptability, and communication skills help you meet deadlines and collaborate effectively with content creators. These skills ensure captions are accurate, accessible, and delivered efficiently, which is crucial for audience comprehension and legal compliance.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in video captioning, and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in video captioning often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, ensuring accuracy with fast-paced dialogue, and maintaining consistency with specialized terminology or accents. Overcoming these challenges typically involves using advanced transcription tools, collaborating closely with content creators for clarifications, and maintaining a thorough style guide. Regularly reviewing and updating captioning software skills can also improve efficiency and accuracy, making the workflow smoother and more manageable.

What is the difference between Video Captioning vs Video Transcription?

Industry UsageMedia, entertainment, education, accessibility servicesMedia, legal, medical, general content transcription

Video captioning involves creating timed text overlays for videos to improve accessibility, often requiring familiarity with captioning standards. Video transcription converts spoken content into written text, focusing on accuracy of dialogue or narration. While both roles involve working with audio/video content, captioning emphasizes timing and formatting for viewers, whereas transcription emphasizes verbatim text conversion. Both jobs share skills in language proficiency and often use similar tools, but serve different purposes in media production and accessibility.

This highly executional role focuses on content capture, production and editing, digital design, and creator partnership operations. You’ll support the creation of social content while owning key workflows, including managing daily social media engagement, managing the partnership inbox, coordinating creator gifting, and tracking deliverables end-to-end. You’ll also play a key role in tracking performance, analyzing trends, and translating insights into actionable recommendations alongside the team to inform our strategy. Reporting to the Social Media & Content Manager, you’ll work closely with the broader Social, Brand, and Marketing team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Content Calendar, Production, and Asset Management:

  • In partnership with the Social Media & Content Manager, maintain a structured and up-to-date content calendar, helping source and select elevated UGC, creating, and captioning engaging content across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
  • Participate in end-to-end content capture, including filming and photographing social-first content on-site at shoots, events, and design locations.
  • Edit and deliver platform-native content (Reels, TikTok, Stories) using Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Ensure all content aligns with brand standards, including composition, styling, and visual consistency.
  • A keen attention to detail across content, grammar, and overall quality.

Partnerships & Collaborations:

  • Manage the partnerships inbox, ensuring timely responses, clear communication, and proper tracking of all inbound opportunities.
  • Execute gifting workflows end-to-end, including product selection, order placement (ShopMy or similar platforms), and follow-up.
  • Maintain detailed trackers for all creator partnerships, ensuring deliverables, timelines, and approvals are clearly documented and met.
  • In partnership with the Social Media & Content Manager, assist in evaluating creators and partners for brand alignment, content quality, and audience fit.
  • Proactively flag risks, delays, or gaps in partnership execution.

Performance & Reporting:

  • Track and report on social and partnership performance on a regular cadence.
  • Analyze content performance, identifying trends, patterns, and actionable opportunities for optimization.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency in reporting data and metrics.

Community Management:

  • Monitor and respond to direct messages, comments, and mentions across all social media channels in a timely and professional manner.
  • Manage collaborations and social inboxes.
  • Foster and grow communities across all platforms, including Facebook Groups.
  • Flag important conversations, opportunities, or issues to the team proactively.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • You have 1–3 years of relevant work experience and a strong understanding of social media, with an emphasis on IG, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Substack, etc.
  • You are passionate about social media, home design, and building the Serena & Lily brand, with a keen eye for design and details.
  • You are a capable writer and meticulous proofreader with strong interpersonal skills.
  • You are highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams, maintain trackers and systems, and ensure strong follow-through.
  • Experience capturing and editing social-first content.
  • Proficiency in video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro. Familiarity with AI-assisted editing tools is a plus.
  • A social presence or portfolio is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sprout Social, and ShopMy is preferred.
  • You are comfortable tracking performance, identifying trends, and applying insights to inform content decisions.
  • You are self-motivated, performance-driven, and able to work in both strategic and hands-on capacities.
  • You can move or handle furniture and filming equipment (0–50 pounds) and operate necessary equipment, including ladders.
  • You do not require employer sponsorship.

POSITION DETAILS:

  • You may need to travel alone or with a group, and you may need to work extended hours or on weekends.
  • You are based in the Bay Area and able to work from our Sausalito office or on location as needed.

COMPENSATION:
