Position Summary
The Vice President of Data is responsible for building and leading the firm's data strategy, analytics, and reporting infrastructure to support legal operations, firm leadership, and business growth. This role owns enterprise data systems, reporting, and insights - translating complex data into actionable intelligence for attorneys, leadership, and operational teams.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Data Strategy & Governance
  • Develop and execute a firm-wide data strategy aligned with business goals, growth plans, and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as the senior leader responsible for data architecture, analytics, and reporting across all departments.
  • Establish data priorities that support litigation outcomes, client performance, financial forecasting, and resource allocation.
  • Advise executive leadership using data-driven insights to inform strategic decisions.
2. Engineering Leadership & Execution
  • Lead and scale the Firm's data infrastructure, analytics platforms, and software systems.
  • Oversee the development of data pipelines, reporting tools, and analytics solutions that drive efficiency and insight.
  • Ensure systems are reliable, scalable, and aligned with long-term technology strategy.
  • Drive delivery of high-quality solutions on time and within scope.
3. Technology Roadmap & Innovation
  • Develop and maintain a forward-looking technology roadmap in collaboration with cross-functional leaders.
  • Identify and implement modern data and cloud architectures (e.g., analytics platforms, automation tools, AI-driven solutions).
  • Evaluate and deploy emerging technologies to improve performance, reduce costs, and enhance scalability.
  • Lead initiatives related to AI agents, analytics automation, and workflow optimization.
4. Team Development & Organizational Design
  • Recruit, mentor, and retain a team of data engineers, analytics professionals, and software specialists.
  • Design organizational structures that support scalability, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and collaboration.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with business leaders across legal operations, finance, HR, and technology to align data initiatives with firm priorities.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support data-driven decision-making across departments.
6. Operational Excellence & Metrics
  • Monitor and optimize engineering KPIs, infrastructure performance, and data reliability.
  • Improve platform efficiency, reduce redundancy, and manage operational costs.
  • Ensure analytics and reporting solutions meet business needs and support strategic decision-making.
7. AI & Automation Enablement
  • Lead the implementation of AI-driven intelligence and automation to improve productivity and reduce operational burden.
  • Identify opportunities where data and automation can enhance Firm workflows and outcomes.
  • Measure and report the impact of AI and automation initiatives.
8. Data Governance & Quality
  • Establish firm-wide standards for data accuracy, consistency, and ownership.
  • Define data governance processes (naming conventions, access controls, validation rules).
  • Ensure data is secure and appropriately accessible across teams.
  • Partner with Legal, IT, and Compliance teams on privacy and security requirements (without owning legal compliance).

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in data engineering, analytics platforms, and enterprise data systems.
  • Proven leadership experience managing technical teams and complex initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, security, and compliance.
  • Ability to operate at an executive level while remaining hands-on when needed.

Preferred
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Experience in professional services, legal, or regulated environments.
  • Experience implementing AI, automation, or advanced analytics solutions.

Compensation: $180,000 - $220,000 per year
