Job description

We have an outstanding career opportunity for a Vice President of Finance to join a leading Company located in the Richmond, VA surrounding area.

Salary: $90,000-$120,000

The Vice President of Finance serves as a key member of the Council's executive leadership team and is responsible for providing strategic financial leadership, stewardship of Council assets, financial planning, accounting operations, investment decision support, budgeting, risk management, and regulatory compliance. This position works closely with the Scout Executive/CEO and leadership team, Executive Board, Treasurer, Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and external auditors to ensure the long-term financial strength and sustainability. 

Job Responsibilities:  
Strategic Leadership
  • Serve as a member of the Council Leadership Team and partner with the Scout Executive/CEO and other members of the Leadership Team in developing long-term strategic and financial plans.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support organizational growth and sustainability.
  • Support major capital projects, property management initiatives, and endowment growth strategies.
  • Serve as the Council's primary finance liaison with Scouting America and build relationships with finance leaders across other Councils to share best practices.
Financial Management
  • Oversee the Council's accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, reconciliations and financial close processes.
  • Provide monthly budget-to-actual variance analysis, identifying financial risks and opportunities and recommending appropriate actions.
  • Develop annual operating and capital budgets in partnership with department leaders.
  • Prepare multi-year financial forecasts and cash flow projections.
  • Monitor key financial performance indicators and provide recommendations for corrective action when necessary.
  • Ensure appropriate internal controls and financial policies are maintained.
  • Provide financial analysis and decision support related to the Council's investment, endowment, and reserve funds in partnership with the Investment Committee and professional investment advisors.
Board and Volunteer Support
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee and Investment Committee.
  • Prepare and oversee the timely production of monthly financial statements, including statements of financial position, statements of activities, cash flow reports, and related financial analyses. 
  • Assist volunteer leadership in evaluating financial trends and investment performance.
Compliance and Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with Scouting America policies, GAAP accounting standards, IRS requirements, and nonprofit reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate the annual audit, Form 990 preparation, and other regulatory filings.
  • Oversee insurance programs and risk management functions.
Team Leadership
  • Lead, coach and develop the Council's accounting and finance staff, establishing clear responsibilities, performance expectations, accountability and professional development goals.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement and strong internal customer service.
Process and Technology Improvements
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve financial processes, systems, reporting and internal controls, leveraging technology to increase efficiency.

Basic Hiring Criteria:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant financial credential preferred.
  • 7-10 years of progressively responsible accounting and finance experience. 
  • 3-5 years of supervisory or management experience. 
  • Experience preparing and presenting financial information to governing boards or committees. 
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work varied hours when necessary to achieve organizational objectives, including some evening and weekend responsibilities. 
  • Currently located in or willing to relocate to Central Virginia.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with enterprise accounting systems and financial reporting software; experience with nonprofit accounting software preferred.
