Job description

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (i.e., New Mexico Tech), New Mexico’s

premier STEM Research university, invites nominations and applications for an accomplished

and visionary academic leader to serve as its next Provost and Vice President for Academic and

Student Affairs. New Mexico Tech continues to be recognized for its academics (e.g., Niche),

value (e.g., Smart Asset), and as one of America’s Top Colleges (e.g., Forbes).

The Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs serves as the University’s

Chief Academic Officer and Chief Student Affairs Officer and is responsible for providing

strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for the institution’s academic and student success

missions. The position oversees all academic programs, student affairs functions,

enrollment-related activities, student support services, and initiatives that promote student

success, retention, persistence, and graduation.

Leading a collaborative partnership of faculty, staff, students, and external partners (e.g.,

industry, national and federal research laboratories), the Provost will promote and facilitate

student success initiatives within an environment of academic and research excellence. This role

offers a visionary, strategic leader the opportunity to facilitate transformative educational and

scholarly experiences that prepare students for wherever their journey takes them. This includes

leading efforts for the institution to reach and sustain R2 status under the current Carnegie

Classification.

This position oversees a variety of direct reports including Associate Vice Presidents, Deans,

Office and Program Directors, and Staff (e.g., Administrative Assistant, Financial Manager). As

a member of the President’s Cabinet, they engage the Board of Regents and a number of external

constituents (e.g., NM Higher Education Department, accreditation agencies, state and federal

legislators, alumni and donors).

A terminal degree (PhD, EdD, or equivalent) in a relevant field is required with a record of

scholarly achievement meriting appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in an

academic department at a STEM research institution. Tenure may be granted following a

successful probationary period.

  • (1) personnel matters, supervision, and professional development;
  • (2) academic administration, enrollment management, and student support services;
  • (3) budget development and management;
  • (4) strategic planning and organizational leadership;
  • (5) accreditation processes and regulatory compliance.

Individuals must have at least 10 years of experience as a faculty member with accomplishments

commensurate with an individual at the rank of full professor with at least 10 years of

progressively responsible academic leadership that may include experience as a department /

program chair or director, dean/associate dean, associate Vice President, or equivalent role(s).
