What is a VHA?

VHA stands for Veterans Health Administration, which is a part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It is the largest integrated health care system in the United States, providing care to eligible military veterans at VA medical centers and clinics across the country. VHA employs a wide range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and administrative staff, to serve the unique needs of veterans. The organization focuses on providing comprehensive medical care, mental health services, and support for veterans and their families.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) employee?

To thrive as a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) employee, you need a combination of healthcare expertise, relevant licensure or certification, and a commitment to serving veterans. Familiarity with VA-specific electronic health records (such as CPRS or VistA), compliance standards, and federal healthcare regulations is important. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and adaptability help foster trust and deliver patient-centered care. These competencies are essential to providing high-quality, compliant, and compassionate healthcare services to the veteran population.

What are some common challenges faced by Veterans Health Administration (VHA) employees in their daily work, and how can new hires prepare for them?

VHA employees often face challenges such as managing a high patient caseload, adapting to evolving healthcare regulations, and ensuring the highest quality of care for veterans with diverse medical needs. New hires can prepare by familiarizing themselves with VHA protocols, participating in available training programs, and actively seeking guidance from experienced team members. Collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams and maintaining clear communication are also essential for navigating the fast-paced and mission-driven environment typical of VHA facilities.

What is the difference between Vha vs Medical Assistant?

VHA roles focus on providing healthcare within veterans' hospitals and clinics, often requiring specialized VA certifications. Medical Assistants work in diverse healthcare settings, performing clinical and administrative tasks, with certifications like CMA. While both roles support patient care, VHA positions are specific to veterans' health services, whereas Medical Assistants serve a broader range of healthcare providers.

Do VHA employees get paid?

Yes, VHA employees, including healthcare providers and administrative staff, receive regular paychecks based on their pay grade and schedule. Compensation varies depending on the position, experience, and location, and employees are typically paid biweekly or monthly. Benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans are also provided.

SharePoint Administrator / Power BI Developer - VHA (Remote)

Job description

Metrics LLC is looking for a SharePoint / Power BI Developer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs. This position is fully remote.

You will own the SharePoint environment and Power BI reporting layer for a Veterans Health Administration program office that manages the activation of newly constructed VA medical facilities — the work of equipping, furnishing, and staffing a building before it opens to patients. The site is live and in daily use by activation managers across eighteen regional networks, and it carries a documented inventory of defects, several of which corrupt the figures VA uses to build its activation funding request. The priority of this effort is correcting those defects and building the reporting layer that does not currently exist — if you have taken over a neglected SharePoint environment and made its reporting trustworthy again, we want to talk to you.

What you'll do:

  • Correct a documented inventory of thirteen platform defects within sixty days of contract start
  • Repair four calculation faults in the staffing cost report, including quarter misassignment on on-board dates and cost captured against unfilled positions
  • Correct the funding report to capture recurring acquisition costs across all applicable out-years rather than a single budget year
  • Build a Power BI reporting layer with drill-down from portfolio to regional network to individual project, covering funding execution by fiscal year, cost against planned budget, staffing levels, and facility opening dates
  • Re-architect individual project pages — new data fields, document libraries replacing ad-hoc lists, and a smart link propagating dates and square footage from the source of record
  • Implement column-header expansion with mouseover data-entry guidance, automated project-page backup, and hover summaries on the active project list
  • Correct newly identified defects within thirty days of identification
  • Produce a how-to for every change so the government team can reproduce it
  • Write the technical content of the administrator manual — how the program office adjusts site configuration, settings, and reports — and provide the field-level detail behind the end-user guides
  • Present technical status at the biweekly meeting with the Contracting Officer's Representative

Minimum qualifications:

  • Four (4) years administering SharePoint Online beyond power-user level: lists and libraries, permissions and inheritance, site pages, versioning, forms, and diagnosing broken behavior in an environment you did not build
  • Demonstrated Power BI development — data modeling, dataflows, and multi-level drill-down reporting
  • Demonstrated experience correcting calculated fields, aggregation errors, and report roll-ups in a production environment
  • Ability to make changes to a live system in daily use without taking it offline
  • Demonstrated technical writing — administrator guides, configuration procedures, or end-user documentation. Documentation is a contract deliverable on this role, not an afterthought; be prepared to describe or show something you have written
  • Able to obtain a favorable VA Tier 1 (low risk) National Agency Check with Inquiries. No security clearance is required
  • US person

Before you apply: your application needs to show Power BI work you built, not Power BI reports you used. Include a portfolio, a link, or a short description of a data model you designed and the drill-down it supported. Listing Power BI as a skill without evidence of development work is the single most common reason an otherwise qualified applicant is screened out on this role.

Preferred:

  • Power Automate for scheduled jobs and change notification
  • Power Apps sufficient to rework list forms
  • Prior VA or VHA SharePoint environment experience
  • Microsoft PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst), MS-700, or SharePoint administration certification
  • Experience inheriting and stabilizing a neglected SharePoint environment
  • Exposure to federal budget or capital-planning data structures — appropriations, fiscal-quarter reporting, full-time equivalent cost roll-ups
