Job Summary:
Swaybox Studios is seeking a VFX Data Wranglerto maintain records of information on set.. This role is central to maintaining the data flow from the production stages to the VFX team.You would be responsible for capturing, logging, and backing up all VFX-related on-set data including, but limited to: balls, Macbeth chart, HDRI photos, reference photography, texture photography, witness cameras, lidar/scans, measurements, and metadata (lens info, camera reports, etc.).
This role would ensure data integrity through verified backups, organized and labeled assets per VFX pipeline standards, and deliver daily reports to the VFX Supervisor and Production. This role works closely with the camera, editorial, and VFX teams to maintain continuity, ensure accurate data capture, and support post-production needs. This is a perfect position for someone with strong organizational skills, technical knowledge of cameras/scanning tools, excellent note taking skills, and attention to detail under tight schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Photography on-set for set reference, HDRIs, and cross polarization.
  • Photogrammetry within our black-out tent for asset texture recreation, including cross polarization, flat lighting, and dynamic lighting.
  • Lidar scanning during and/or after shoots to capture all set placement as well as lighting set ups.
  • Record balls and chart passes with the camera team during shooting.
  • Take measurements and thorough notes for all lighting and actor set ups and any other necessary information the day.
  • Ingest and offload/process all data captured from on-set into the appropriate network folders, using the production's naming conventions, folder structures, and metadata requirements.
  • Manage and contribute to the proprietary on-set database, including but not limited to lens data, shot/take numbering, measurements, VFX notes, etc.
  • Place tracking markers where/when needed.
  • Operate witness cameras as necessary.
  • Fill in shot slating during shoot, where needed.
  • Troubleshoot data offloading equipment (laptops, lidar scanner, camera, etc.).
  • Maintain output quality and momentum in a fast-paced environment.
  • Coordinate with other VFX data wranglers, editorial, and camera departments to ensure all data is captured and verify that no data corruption or loss occurs during transfer.
  • Collaborate with VFX Supervisor, Production, and TDs to identify areas of improvement in the pipeline, including tool and workflow development.
  • Maintain daily media reports (file counts, backup logs, handoffs, etc.) and communicate status updates.
  • Assess needs, priorities, and delivery expectations with VFX Supervisor and Production.

Required Qualifications:
  • 2+ years experience in high-end, live action VFX films or television.
  • Expert knowledge of photography, including understanding of lenses, lighting setups, and performance tracking.
  • Proficient with a DSLR camera and processing for both photogrammetry and bracketed HDRIs.
  • Strong understanding of lidar scanning and processing data.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt quickly to unique or proprietary workflows.
  • Willingness to receive and implement constructive feedback, whether that's with draw-overs, over the shoulder adjustments, or team meetings.
  • Basic knowledge of Shotgrid and RV.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in production coordinating is a plus.
  • Experience with Cyclone Register 360 Plus for lidar scanning ingest.
  • Experience using Reality Scan for processing lidar scans and photogrammetry.
  • Experience using Rawtherapee for processing RAW data files.
  • Familiarity with hybrid workflows that span traditional VFX and digital puppetry.
  • Basic understanding of CG workflows.
