Job description

Overview

Care Center is a 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital with locations in Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio. We are excited to offer a unique externship experience for veterinary students. Externs work closely with emergency veterinarians in a fast‑paced environment, handling all aspects of case management from triage to discharge and collaborating with other hospital departments.

Program Details

The student externship program is flexible, with most students working in two‑to‑eight‑week blocks. We welcome students from all class years and customize involvement to match current knowledge and skill level, ensuring growth and learning. Externs shadow attending emergency veterinarians, perform hands‑on exams, diagnostics, and procedures when possible, and participate in informal rounds with clinicians.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with attending emergency veterinarians throughout the patient care continuum.
  • Perform triage, discharge, and all other aspects of case management.
  • Shadow exam rooms and conduct student‑led exams and diagnostics.
  • Assist with hands‑on procedures such as NG tube, central line, and urinary catheter placement as appropriate.
  • Participate in informal rounds and discussions with clinicians.
