Position Overview

Vet First, Inc. is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping military veterans build successful careers in agriculture while strengthening America's food security. Through its Veteran Farm-to-Table Agricultural Education & Training Program, Vet First combines classroom instruction with hands‑on farming experience, industry‑recognized certifications, and mentorship from experienced agricultural professionals.

Vet First is seeking a reliable and experienced Farm Manager to oversee the daily operations of its demonstration farm located at the Williamsburg Winery. This position is responsible for managing vegetable gardens, greenhouse and hoop house production, orchard maintenance, and general farm operations while providing hands‑on mentorship and agricultural training to veterans entering the farming profession.

The ideal candidate is passionate about sustainable agriculture, enjoys working outdoors, and is comfortable balancing crop production, equipment operation, property maintenance, and agricultural education.

Veterans are highly encouraged to apply, though military service is not required.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily maintenance and production of vegetable gardens, greenhouse, and hoop house operations.
  • Develop seasonal planting schedules, crop rotations, and harvest plans to maximize year-round production.
  • Maintain healthy soils through irrigation management, composting, nutrient management, and sustainable growing practices.
  • Care for fruit trees, orchards, perennial crops, and other agricultural plantings throughout the property.
  • Monitor crops for pests, diseases, and weeds, implementing integrated pest management (IPM) and environmentally responsible growing practices.
  • Operate tractors, mowers, UTVs, and other agricultural equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on farm equipment, irrigation systems, fencing, tools, and agricultural infrastructure.
  • Assist with construction and maintenance of raised beds, fencing, walkways, hoop houses, irrigation systems, and other farm improvements.
  • Mentor veterans participating in Vet First's agricultural training program by demonstrating farming techniques, equipment operation, and sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Supervise volunteers and assist with agricultural education programs and hands‑on training opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate records related to crop production, planting schedules, equipment maintenance, inventory, and farm operations.
  • Collaborate with winery leadership and other departments on seasonal projects, property improvements, and special events.
  • Ensure a safe, organized, and clean working environment while following OSHA and agricultural safety standards.
Qualifications
  • Experience with vegetable production, irrigation systems, soil management, composting, and sustainable agriculture preferred.
  • Experience operating tractors, mowers, UTVs, and other agricultural equipment.
  • Basic mechanical, carpentry, or maintenance skills are highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively managing multiple priorities.
  • Comfortable mentoring others and working with volunteers or trainees.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Experience working with veterans or nonprofit organizations is a plus.
