As a Vertical Transportation Engineer, you will contribute to the planning, design, and construction administration of elevator, escalator, and related conveyance systems across various Vertical Transportation (VT) sectors. This position works closely with and support the Vertical Transportation Technical Lead in delivering high quality, code compliant system designs and project tasks. Develop and apply a strong understanding of vertical transportation principles, including system selection, equipment design, and regulatory requirements. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, and contractors to ensure seamless system integration throughout all project phases, from concept through commissioning. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB's clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Drafting
Prepare detailed vertical transportation design drawings, layouts, and schematics using Revit, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation under the guidance of senior engineers.
Develop elevator and escalator layouts, including shaft dimensions, pit depths, overhead clearances, machine room requirements, and equipment coordination details.
Engineering Support
Assist in the preparation of design calculations, including elevator traffic analysis, handling capacity, interval studies, and system performance evaluations.
Support development of design criteria, technical specifications, and contract documents for VT systems.
Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs for compliance with project specifications and industry codes.
Field Work & Construction Administration
Perform site visits to monitor installation progress, verify field conditions, and document contractor performance.
Conduct equipment condition assessments and modernization evaluations for existing systems.
Support testing, commissioning, and final inspections of VT systems.
Coordination & Communication
Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve design conflicts and ensure proper system integration.
Participate in project meetings and provide technical input during design reviews and coordination sessions.
Assist in preparing technical reports, feasibility studies, and client deliverables.
Independent & Team-Based Work
Demonstrate the ability to manage assigned tasks independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative engineering team.
Maintain strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
  • Assist in the development of project specifications.
  • Responsible for development of discipline specific engineering project elements/deliverables such as reports, designs, and plans.
  • Aids in the coordination and productivity of project team members.
  • Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineering project team members.
  • Works closely with other disciplines and on multi-discipline projects.
  • Performs quality control reviews of discipline - specific engineering project elements/deliverables.
  • Assists with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work within discipline.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and 3 year of relevant experience, or
  • PhD in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience

What You'll Bring:

  • Optimizing work processes by using knowledge of the most effective and efficient ways to get things done with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Independently progresses the majority of designs and tasks required of the discipline.
  • Exhibiting experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and MicroStation and/or AutoCad.
  • Exhibiting a thorough understanding of the application related to engineering, geometric and algebraic principles.
  • Managing time, proactively forecasting, and communicating project development needs.

What We Prefer:

  • 3-8 years of professional experience in vertical transportation engineering, with consulting experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in Revit and/or AutoCAD/MicroStation for design and documentation
  • Working knowledge of ASME A17.1 Elevator Code and applicable building codes and standards
  • Familiarity with elevator, escalator and moving walk systems
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • EIT (Engineer-in-Training) or progress toward PE licensure
