What is a venture partner?

Venture Partners are experienced professionals who work with venture capital firms, usually on a part-time or contract basis, to help identify, evaluate, and support promising startup investments. Unlike full-time partners, Venture Partners may not be involved in the day-to-day operations of the firm but contribute their industry expertise, networks, and deal-sourcing capabilities. They often assist with due diligence, mentor portfolio companies, and sometimes take board seats. This role is ideal for individuals who want to remain active in the startup ecosystem while pursuing other interests or entrepreneurial ventures.

What is the difference between Venture Partner vs Investment Analyst?

AspectVenture PartnerInvestment Analyst
Required CredentialsExperience in startups, venture capital, or entrepreneurshipDegree in finance, economics, or related field; often entry-level
Work EnvironmentPart-time or flexible, often advisory role in VC firmsFull-time, research-focused in investment firms or banks
Employer & Industry UsageVenture capital firms, startup acceleratorsInvestment banks, asset management firms, VC firms

Venture Partners typically have industry experience and serve in advisory or flexible roles within venture capital firms, focusing on sourcing deals and providing strategic guidance. Investment Analysts are usually entry-level professionals conducting research and financial analysis to support investment decisions. While both roles are involved in venture capital, Venture Partners have more experience and a strategic role, whereas Investment Analysts focus on analysis and research.

How do you become a venture partner?

To become a venture partner, individuals typically have extensive experience in entrepreneurship, investing, or industry expertise, and often build a strong network within the venture capital community. They may be invited by a venture capital firm or demonstrate their value through successful investments, strategic advice, or operational roles. Developing relevant skills, such as financial analysis and deal sourcing, and establishing credibility are key steps in the process.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a venture partner?

To thrive as a Venture Partner, you generally need deep industry expertise, a strong investment background, and proven experience in entrepreneurship or executive leadership. Familiarity with financial modeling tools, due diligence processes, and platforms like PitchBook or Crunchbase is common, and an MBA or similar advanced degree is often preferred. Exceptional networking, communication, and strategic thinking skills help build relationships with startups and other investors. These abilities are crucial for sourcing high-potential deals, guiding portfolio companies, and driving returns for the venture fund.

What does a venture partner do?

A venture partner is a senior professional who collaborates with venture capital firms to identify, evaluate, and support investment opportunities in startups. They often bring industry expertise, networks, and strategic guidance, and may participate in due diligence and portfolio management. Their role can be flexible, with some focusing on deal sourcing and others on mentoring portfolio companies.

How does a venture partner typically collaborate with investment teams and portfolio companies?

A Venture Partner often works closely with the core investment team to identify promising startups, conduct due diligence, and provide strategic input during investment decisions. They also serve as valuable advisors to portfolio companies, offering mentorship, industry connections, and operational guidance. This collaborative role allows Venture Partners to leverage their expertise and network while contributing to both the fund's and startups' success, often on a flexible or part-time basis.

Job description

About Bessemer Venture Partners
Bessemer Venture Partners helps entrepreneurs lay strong foundations to build and forge long-standing companies. With more than 145 IPOs and 300 portfolio companies in the enterprise, infrastructure, consumer, and healthcare spaces, Bessemer supports founders and CEOs from their early days through every stage of growth. Bessemer's global portfolio has included Anthropic, Pinterest, Shopify, Twilio, LinkedIn, PagerDuty, DocuSign, Fiverr, and Toast, and has more than $20 billion of assets under management. Bessemer has teams of investors and partners located in Tel Aviv, Silicon Valley, San Francisco, New York, London, Hong Kong, Boston, and Bangalore. Born from innovations in steel more than a century ago, Bessemer's storied history has afforded its partners the opportunity to celebrate and scrutinize its best investment decisions (see Memos) and also learn from its mistakes (see Anti-Portfolio).
The Role
We are hiring an Investment Associate or Senior Associate to focus on the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem. As a "full stack" investor, you will be responsible for engaging across the full investment lifecycle, from thesis development through portfolio support. This role reports to Mike Droesch. You will work closely with him, while also receiving mentorship from other senior partners and team members at Bessemer, who will invest heavily in your development and growth.
We are looking for someone with an exceptional work ethic who is entrepreneurial, curious, resourceful, and competitive. The right candidate takes full ownership of programs and initiatives with minimal direction, knows how to figure things out, and knows when to ask for help. You are willing to tackle any task, no matter how big or small, and are drawn to unconventional ideas.
Ideal start date: Q3 2026 (flexible)
Location: San Francisco, CA - in office 3 to 4+ days per week
Key Responsibilities
โ–ธ Thesis development. create and refine investment roadmaps to guide firm strategy, and form and defend strong points of view on where AI infrastructure, agentic automation, and vertical AI applications are headed. No prior investing experience required.
โ–ธ Sourcing. identify and build genuine relationships with promising founders, teams, and startups. Embed yourself in the ecosystem; you should want to be out at events, dinners, and meetups, not just working from a desk.
โ–ธ Due diligence. lead financial analysis and diligence on customers, products, technology, teams, and markets.
โ–ธ Investment recommendations. form judgements and present analyses and opinions to help drive investment decisions.
โ–ธ Portfolio Support. assist portfolio companies with introductions, strategy, hiring, resources, and more. Attend board meetings.
What You'll Bring
โ–ธ AI native. constantly using and experimenting with cutting edge products, technologies, and models, with strong, well-formed opinions on where the space is heading, not just what's trending this week.
โ–ธ Out in the world. you genuinely enjoy being in the community, attending events, showing up to founder meetups, and building real relationships rather than transactional ones. Sourcing isn't a chore for you, it's how you spend your free time too.
โ–ธ Professional experience. ideally 2-4+ years of relevant professional experience in an operating role at a startup, as a founder, scientist, technologist, investor, or technology investment banker.
โ–ธ Technical experience. ideally degree(s) or self-taught expertise in computer science, mathematics, machine learning, engineering, or a related field. Exceptions will be considered for exceptional candidates.
โ–ธ Independent thinker, fast learner. you run with ambiguity and don't need step-by-step direction to make progress.
โ–ธ great at connecting with founders.
โ–ธ self-driven, proactive doer.
โ–ธ Commercial mindset. you love thinking about businesses and technology.
โ–ธ Location. based in the San Francisco Bay Area, in office 3 to 4+ days per week.
