What does a remote vendor manager do?

A remote vendor manager is responsible for overseeing relationships with third-party suppliers and service providers while working from a location outside of a traditional office. Their duties include selecting vendors, negotiating contracts, monitoring performance, and ensuring service quality meets company standards. Remote vendor managers use digital tools to communicate, track deliverables, and resolve issues efficiently. They play a crucial role in optimizing costs and ensuring the company’s supply chain or services run smoothly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote vendor manager?

To excel as a Vendor Manager in a remote setting, you need strong contract negotiation, supply chain management, and analytical skills, often supported by a degree in business or supply chain and relevant experience. Familiarity with procurement platforms (such as SAP Ariba or Coupa), vendor management systems, and data analysis tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for coordinating with vendors and internal teams virtually. These competencies ensure effective vendor relationships, cost control, and smooth operations in a distributed work environment.

How does a remote vendor manager effectively build and maintain strong relationships with vendors without in-person meetings?

As a remote Vendor Manager, maintaining strong vendor relationships relies heavily on clear, proactive communication and the use of digital collaboration tools. Regular video conferences, timely responses to inquiries, and transparent sharing of expectations help foster trust and alignment. Building rapport may require extra effort, such as scheduling periodic check-ins and utilizing project management platforms to track deliverables and milestones. It's also important to create structured feedback loops to address issues promptly and ensure ongoing partnership success.

Job description

SOLV Energy is a leading provider of infrastructure services to the power industry, designing, building and maintaining utility scale solar, battery storage and high voltage substation projects nationwide.

Job Description Summary:

The Senior Engineer, Construction - Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is a senior-level individual contributor within SOLV Energy's Construction Engineering organization. This role provides advanced technical oversight, engineering judgment, and BESS subject matter expertise to support EPC project execution, commissioning, and warranty activities. The Senior Engineer, Construction - BESS functions as a technical authority for high-risk BESS scopes, EOR and vendor coordination, system integration, fire protection coordination, commissioning support, and complex site or warranty issues while maintaining an individual contributor track with mentorship responsibilities.
This role expands upon the Construction Engineer III level by owning higher-complexity BESS engineering coordination and review scopes, influencing standards and process development, and supporting portfolio-level continuous improvement initiatives.
This role is fully remote. Specific location details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Job Description:

*This job description reflects management's assignment of essential functions; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned

Position Responsibilities and Duties:

BESS Engineering Oversight & EOR Coordination

  • Serve as a BESS subject matter expert for battery energy storage system engineering scopes including equipment layout, electrical integration, controls, fire protection interfaces, commissioning support, and project execution requirements.

  • Coordinate Engineers of Record, vendors, third-party consultants, fire protection engineers, AHJs, owners, and project stakeholders to support timely and accurate BESS engineering deliverables.

  • Review BESS drawings, specifications, technical reports, vendor documentation, commissioning documentation, and related integration deliverables for alignment with contract requirements, project requirements, SOLV expectations, and site needs.

  • Track BESS engineering action items, review comments, vendor responses, consultant responses, and design revisions through closure across assigned projects.

  • Support resolution of technical conflicts, constructability concerns, field questions, vendor coordination issues, and consultant coordination issues involving BESS scope.

Technical Review, Vendor Coordination & Fire Protection Support

  • Review and coordinate technical comments related to BESS system architecture, equipment layouts, single-line diagrams, control narratives, vendor packages, augmentation considerations, and project integration requirements.

  • Support review of BESS fire protection design packages, hazard mitigation documentation, and AHJ-facing technical information in coordination with fire protection consultants and project stakeholders.

  • Coordinate technical comments with EORs, vendors, owners, AHJs, independent engineers, project teams, and commissioning teams to obtain timely responses and revisions.

  • Support technical evaluation of BESS equipment, vendor documentation, commissioning procedures, performance requirements, and project-specific design criteria.

  • Identify recurring BESS deliverable, vendor, or integration issues and recommend improvements to scopes of work, review checklists, templates, and execution standards.

Construction, Commissioning & Warranty Support

  • Provide senior-level engineering support during BESS construction, testing, commissioning, energization, and initial operations.

  • Support project teams with RFIs, engineering clarifications, field issue resolution, design revisions, and interpretation of EOR or vendor responses.

  • Participate in technical discussions with project managers, project engineers, field teams, commissioning teams, owners, independent engineers, AHJs, vendors, and consultants.

  • Support technical evaluation of commissioning findings, startup issues, equipment performance concerns, punch list items, and turnover issues involving BESS scope.

  • Participate in warranty investigations, root-cause evaluations, and corrective action development related to BESS equipment, installation, integration, or performance issues.

Technical Leadership & Standards Development

  • Contribute to creation and refinement of BESS engineering standards, review workflows, SWIs, deliverable trackers, comment logs, and best-practice documents.

  • Serve as a technical escalation resource for site-based field teams, project engineers, and project managers seeking guidance on BESS engineering questions during project execution.

  • Provide practical technical guidance, lessons learned, and SME support to field and project teams to improve consistency, reduce delays, and improve issue resolution efficiency.

  • Support Construction Engineering leadership with high-risk scope reviews, portfolio-level technical insights, and recurring issue trend analysis.

  • Mentor Construction Engineering staff as needed through technical guidance, document review support, and knowledge sharing without direct supervisory responsibility.

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field required.

  • 3-5+ years of progressive electrical engineering, BESS engineering, EPC, utility-scale renewable energy, power systems, or energy storage experience with demonstrated advanced technical responsibility.

  • Strong understanding of BESS design, integration, commissioning interfaces, battery systems, inverters, BMS, EMS, controls, grid interconnection equipment, and project execution requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate EORs, vendors, consultants, AHJs, owners, and internal project teams to resolve complex engineering issues and drive deliverables to completion.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for leading technical discussions with field teams, project engineers, project managers, consultants, owners, AHJs, vendors, and independent engineers.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, document control systems, and BESS or power system analysis tools is preferred.
