Work EnvironmentWeb development, content management, templatingApplication development, backend systems
Employer & Industry UsageWeb agencies, enterprise content managementSoftware companies, enterprise applications
Common Search & ComparisonVelocity Developer vs Java Developer

The main difference between a Velocity Developer and a Java Developer lies in their focus areas. Velocity Developers specialize in using the Velocity templating engine for web content and document generation, often working within content management systems. Java Developers have a broader scope, working on Java-based applications, backend systems, and software development. While both roles require Java knowledge, Velocity Developers focus more on templating and presentation layers, whereas Java Developers handle core application logic.

What is a Velocity developer?

Velocity Developers are software professionals who specialize in working with Apache Velocity, a Java-based template engine. They create, customize, and maintain dynamic web pages and email templates by integrating data models with Velocity templates. Their work often involves collaborating with front-end developers and backend engineers to ensure seamless data flow and presentation. Velocity Developers are commonly found in organizations that use Java web applications and require dynamic content rendering.

How does a Velocity developer typically collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

As a Velocity Developer, you will frequently work closely with both designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of dynamic content within web applications. Collaboration often involves translating design mockups into Velocity templates, refining user interface elements based on feedback, and working with backend teams to access and render the necessary data efficiently. Regular meetings and code reviews help maintain alignment and ensure that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication and a willingness to iterate are key to successfully bridging the gap between design vision and technical implementation.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Velocity developer?

To thrive as a Velocity Developer, you need strong skills in Java programming, templating engines, and web development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Apache Velocity, integrated development environments (IDEs) like IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating business requirements into functional templates. These skills ensure efficient template development, maintainable code, and successful integration in dynamic web applications.

Job description

Worth is now looking looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team of 4-8 engineers. This role is responsible for delivering meaningful product outcomes while building a healthy, accountable, and growth-oriented team culture.

You will balance execution, people leadership, and technical oversight. You are not expected to be the primary hands-on contributor, but you must maintain strong technical judgment and credibility. Your success will be measured by your team's ability to ship reliably, grow professionally, and operate with clarity and ownership.

This role requires someone who can create structure without bureaucracy, hold a high bar without eroding psychological safety, and translate business priorities into focused engineering execution.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of 4-8 engineers across one product area or domain.
  • Own team delivery outcomes, including roadmap execution, reliability, and quality.
  • Partner closely with Product and Design to translate business priorities into clear technical plans.
  • Drive cycle planning, estimation, and delivery accountability.
  • Remove blockers and resolve cross-team dependencies.
  • Ensure the team balances speed with long-term maintainability.
  • Maintain visibility into system health, performance, and risk areas.
  • Provide regular 1:1 coaching and actionable feedback to each team member.
  • Conduct performance reviews, career development planning, and growth conversations.
  • Hire, interview, and onboard new engineers as the team scales.
  • Create an environment of psychological safety while maintaining high standards.
  • Coach engineers on ownership, system design, and execution discipline.
  • Address performance issues early and constructively.
  • Escalate risks and communicate tradeoffs clearly to leadership.
  • Contribute to organizational process improvements and engineering culture initiatives.
Technology Stack
  • Languages & Runtimes: Node.js, TypeScript
  • Frameworks: Nest.js, React.js
  • Data & Messaging: PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis, Redshift
  • Infrastructure & Orchestration: Kubernetes, ArgoCD, AWS
  • Monitoring: DataDog

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of experience directly managing engineers.
  • Requires hands on keyboard at 50-80% of the time
  • Experience leading teams of at least 4 engineers.
  • Strong track record of delivering complex software projects on schedule.
  • Solid system design fundamentals and architectural judgment.
  • Experience partnering with Product and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow engineers across multiple levels.
  • Ability to balance delivery pressure with long-term technical health.
  • Experience navigating ambiguity and setting clear direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to manage conflict constructively.
Success Metrics
  • The team consistently delivers roadmap commitments with predictable velocity.
  • Engineering quality and reliability remain high under delivery pressure.
  • Engagement and retention within the team are strong.
  • Engineers demonstrate measurable growth in skill, ownership, and autonomy.
  • Production incidents are handled effectively with strong post-incident learning.
  • Cross-functional stakeholders trust the team's commitments and execution.
Bonus Points (nice to haves, not requirements)
  • Experience scaling engineering teams in high-growth environments.
  • Experience managing distributed or remote-first teams.
  • Strong background in distributed systems or event-driven architecture.
  • Experience contributing to organizational-level engineering process improvements.
  • Prior experience managing through periods of technical transformation or re-architecture.

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
