Work EnvironmentWeb development, content management, templatingApplication development, backend systems
Employer & Industry UsageWeb agencies, enterprise content managementSoftware companies, enterprise applications
Common Search & ComparisonVelocity Developer vs Java Developer

The main difference between a Velocity Developer and a Java Developer lies in their focus areas. Velocity Developers specialize in using the Velocity templating engine for web content and document generation, often working within content management systems. Java Developers have a broader scope, working on Java-based applications, backend systems, and software development. While both roles require Java knowledge, Velocity Developers focus more on templating and presentation layers, whereas Java Developers handle core application logic.

What are Velocity Developers?

Velocity Developers are software professionals who specialize in working with Apache Velocity, a Java-based template engine. They create, customize, and maintain dynamic web pages and email templates by integrating data models with Velocity templates. Their work often involves collaborating with front-end developers and backend engineers to ensure seamless data flow and presentation. Velocity Developers are commonly found in organizations that use Java web applications and require dynamic content rendering.

How does a Velocity Developer typically collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

As a Velocity Developer, you will frequently work closely with both designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of dynamic content within web applications. Collaboration often involves translating design mockups into Velocity templates, refining user interface elements based on feedback, and working with backend teams to access and render the necessary data efficiently. Regular meetings and code reviews help maintain alignment and ensure that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication and a willingness to iterate are key to successfully bridging the gap between design vision and technical implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Velocity Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Velocity Developer, you need strong skills in Java programming, templating engines, and web development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Apache Velocity, integrated development environments (IDEs) like IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating business requirements into functional templates. These skills ensure efficient template development, maintainable code, and successful integration in dynamic web applications.

Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a highly capable Applications Engineer to support and advance Velocity-based EDA-to-ATE conversion flows for leading semiconductor customers worldwide.

This role focuses on implementing and optimizing automated test conversion flows spanning design, DFT, simulation, and production ATE environments. The engineer will work directly with customer engineering teams, DFT architects, and internal Velocity developers to deploy advanced automation methodologies that accelerate First-Time-Right Silicon and reduce Time-to-Market.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with semiconductor test conversion environments including Velocity, Test Insight, VTRAN, and/or TSSI, along with strong understanding of DFT, STIL/WGL formats, and ATE production workflows.

As the industry moves toward AI-assisted engineering automation, this role will also leverage AI-driven productivity tools and intelligent automation frameworks to improve conversion quality, debug efficiency, and deployment scalability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy and support Velocity EDA-to-ATE conversion flows for strategic semiconductor customers
Develop and optimize automated conversion methodologies for STIL, WGL, EVCD, IJTAG, and SSN environments
Support conversion and debug flows targeting Advantest V93000/ST8 platforms
Analyze and resolve conversion, timing, protocol, and pattern integration issues
Work directly with customer DFT, Design, Validation, and Test Engineering teams
Develop automation scripts and utilities using Python, Java, and related technologies
    Support AI-assisted engineering workflows for:
    o Pattern debug and diagnostics
o Log parsing and structured data analysis
o Conversion validation and regression analysis
o Automated script and code generation
Assist in development of scalable conversion infrastructure and peak-bandwidth automation environments
Collaborate with Velocity core engineering on feature enhancements and customer requirements
Support customer training, deployment, and technical workshops globally

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
Experience with semiconductor EDA-to-ATE conversion environments
Hands-on experience with one or more of the following:
    o Velocity
    o Test Insight
    o VTRAN
    o TSSI
Strong understanding of DFT and semiconductor test methodologies
Experience with STIL, WGL, EVCD, or related pattern formats
Programming experience in Python, Java, Perl, and/or C++
Strong debugging and analytical problem-solving skills
Ability to work directly with customers in high-pressure production environments
Strong communication and technical presentation skills

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Advantest V93000/ST7/ST8 environments
Knowledge of IJTAG, SSN, EDT, JTAG, or scan architectures
Experience with Siemens Tessent or related DFT tool flows
Experience developing automation infrastructure for large-scale regression or conversion systems
