Velocity Developer information

What is a Velocity developer?

Velocity Developers are software professionals who specialize in working with Apache Velocity, a Java-based template engine. They create, customize, and maintain dynamic web pages and email templates by integrating data models with Velocity templates. Their work often involves collaborating with front-end developers and backend engineers to ensure seamless data flow and presentation. Velocity Developers are commonly found in organizations that use Java web applications and require dynamic content rendering.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Velocity developer?

To thrive as a Velocity Developer, you need strong skills in Java programming, templating engines, and web development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Apache Velocity, integrated development environments (IDEs) like IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating business requirements into functional templates. These skills ensure efficient template development, maintainable code, and successful integration in dynamic web applications.

How does a Velocity developer typically collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

As a Velocity Developer, you will frequently work closely with both designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of dynamic content within web applications. Collaboration often involves translating design mockups into Velocity templates, refining user interface elements based on feedback, and working with backend teams to access and render the necessary data efficiently. Regular meetings and code reviews help maintain alignment and ensure that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication and a willingness to iterate are key to successfully bridging the gap between design vision and technical implementation.

Job description

Your Opportunity
Schwab Advisor Services (AS) is the industry leader in providing custody, trading, technology, and practice management services to independent advisory firms. Schwab serves approximately 16,000 individual RIA businesses with over $5 trillion in assets under management in accounts at Schwab. In Advisor Services, Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) and their clients are at the center of everything we do. We have built our business on serving the needs of RIAs and advancing an industry that helps them and their clients thrive. This includes the third-party platforms that enable RIAs to run their businesses effectively.
Schwab Advisor Services is building an MCP (Model Context Platform) server that can support both internal and external needs, and the developer experience that powers it is critical to our success. As part of this effort, we are making critical updates to our Developer Portal which is designed to empower our third-party integrators - fintech firms, and technically sophisticated RIA firms - to seamlessly connect with Schwab's capabilities and build the next generation of advisor-facing solutions. As Product Owner for the Developer Portal, you'll report directly to the Director of Digital Product Management and own the end-to-end experience that enables our partner ecosystem to discover, integrate, and build on top of Schwab's platform.
What you'll do:
  • Own and drive the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for MCP capabilities in the Schwab's developer portal, ensuring the platform meets the evolving needs of third-party integrators, AI application builders, and fintech partners
  • Define and prioritize the developer experience - including API documentation, sandbox environments, authentication flows, onboarding journeys, and self-service tooling - so that external developers can integrate quickly and confidently
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Schwab's API capabilities and MCP architecture; serve as the connective tissue between internal platform teams and the external developer community
  • Lead discovery and validation efforts with third-party integrators, fintech providers, and AI developers to identify friction points, unmet needs, and high-value portal enhancements
  • Establish and track developer-centric success metrics - such as API adoption, integration velocity, developer satisfaction, and time-to-first-call - and communicate progress and outcomes to the Director and relevant stakeholders
  • Partner closely with engineering, security, compliance, and design teams to deliver a scalable, secure, and reliable developer portal that reflects Schwab's standards for quality and trust
  • Champion the voice of the external developer community, continuously gathering feedback and translating it into prioritized backlog items, user stories, and acceptance criteria
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure the developer portal aligns with enterprise API strategy, MCP roadmap priorities, and the broader advisor technology ecosystem
  • Stay current on generative AI trends, agent frameworks, and the tooling that AI application developers rely on, proactively identifying opportunities to evolve the portal to support these use cases

We Believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis without employer sponsorship.
What you have
Required Experience & Skills:
  • 5+ years of experience as a Product Owner or in digital product management, with a demonstrated ability to deliver complex technology and business solutions
  • Hands-on experience working with APIs, including defining API requirements, supporting integrations, or delivering API-oriented products
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize a product backlog, write clear user stories and acceptance criteria, and drive sprint execution in an agile environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience using data, customer insights, and market feedback to guide product decisions and measure success
  • Effective stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to synthesize input from diverse partners and align teams around shared priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present product plans, progress updates, and business cases clearly to internal audiences
  • Experience developing product metrics and adoption frameworks to measure and communicate product value
  • Bachelor's degree required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience with Schwab Advisor Center capabilities and advisor workflows preferred
  • Experience with MCP, platform, or workflow-orchestration products that serve multiple customer segments or partner ecosystems
  • Familiarity with fintech or financial services technology platforms

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
