Velocity Developer information

What is a Velocity developer?

Velocity Developers are software professionals who specialize in working with Apache Velocity, a Java-based template engine. They create, customize, and maintain dynamic web pages and email templates by integrating data models with Velocity templates. Their work often involves collaborating with front-end developers and backend engineers to ensure seamless data flow and presentation. Velocity Developers are commonly found in organizations that use Java web applications and require dynamic content rendering.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Velocity developer?

To thrive as a Velocity Developer, you need strong skills in Java programming, templating engines, and web development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Apache Velocity, integrated development environments (IDEs) like IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating business requirements into functional templates. These skills ensure efficient template development, maintainable code, and successful integration in dynamic web applications.

How does a Velocity developer typically collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

As a Velocity Developer, you will frequently work closely with both designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of dynamic content within web applications. Collaboration often involves translating design mockups into Velocity templates, refining user interface elements based on feedback, and working with backend teams to access and render the necessary data efficiently. Regular meetings and code reviews help maintain alignment and ensure that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication and a willingness to iterate are key to successfully bridging the gap between design vision and technical implementation.

Job description

At FORTÉ, every role plays a part in reimagining how the modern workplace works. Whether you're on the front lines with customers or behind the scenes making things run, your work helps people connect, collaborate, and get things done. From classrooms to control centers, we design and deliver the systems that power smarter, more connected workplaces - and it all starts with the people who make them possible. FORTÉ (formerly AVI Systems) is a 100% employee-owned company with 50+ years of experience and a bold new identity.
The Velocity Product Manager is responsible for driving the commercial success and global growth of FORTÉ's Velocity Solutions, serving as the custodian of the product catalog and its market impact. This role ensures that every publicly available product in the Velocity portfolio performs at a high level in the market by aligning it with customer needs, sales objectives, and performance standards.
This position owns the Velocity Certification process and manages it for both customer-specific certifications, as well as the public-facing Velocity catalog. Using a structured product management approach and best practices, the Velocity Product Manager will ensure that each Velocity solution delivers measurable value and grows FORTÉ's market share in scalable AV solution sales.
Additionally, this role will focus on expanding Velocity's reach internationally, adapting offerings to meet regional requirements and ensuring the Velocity catalog's demand in new markets. The Velocity Product Manager also works closely with the Sales team to create the technical vision and strategy for project conception and solution design through presentations, demonstrations, and business documentation. The role requires demonstrated knowledge of AV design principles, budget considerations, and delivery processes, with the ability to communicate that information clearly in both oral and written form.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5+ years of experience in product management, technical product management, AV/UC solution design, sales engineering, or a related technology role, with demonstrated ownership of products, solutions, or portfolios.
  • Strong understanding of product lifecycle management, roadmaps, customer discovery, market analysis, KPI development, adoption, revenue performance, and business-case development.
  • Working technical expertise in commercial AV/UC systems, including product selection, interoperability, bills of material, installation requirements, networking fundamentals, commissioning considerations, and scalable system design.
  • Strong analytical and commercial skills with the ability to evaluate product mix, pricing, profitability, competitive position, customer demand, and sales performance.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with experience supporting customer conversations, sales teams, technical stakeholders, manufacturers, and executive leadership.
  • AVIXA CTS certification is preferred; CTS-D, ANP, Network+ or comparable technical credentials are a plus. Bachelor's degree in business, product management, engineering, technology, or a related field is preferred.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Own the Velocity product portfolio and end-to-end lifecycle, including product definition, certification, launch, adoption, annual refreshes, optimization, and retirement.
  • Develop and maintain a forward-looking roadmap aligned with customer needs, technology trends, business strategy, regional requirements, and sales opportunities.
  • Define and track KPIs for adoption, revenue, product mix, profitability, sales activity, and market performance; use data to prioritize improvements and new product opportunities.
  • Conduct ongoing customer, market, and competitive analysis to identify demand trends, unmet needs, emerging technologies, differentiators, and opportunities to grow Velocity market share.
  • Partner with Sales to support product launches, strategic opportunities, customer conversations, product positioning, training, and sales-enablement materials that make Velocity easier to understand and sell.
  • Apply AV/UC technical knowledge to validate product selection, compatibility, system functionality, bills of material, installation requirements, network considerations, and deployment readiness for standardized Velocity solutions.
  • Partner with Engineering, Technical Services, manufacturers, and operations teams to test new products and technologies, resolve technical risks, and ensure products can be deployed consistently at scale.
  • Lead cross-functional product development and release activity, aligning requirements, timelines, responsibilities, testing, documentation, pricing, operational readiness, and go-to-market plans.
  • Serve as the primary product liaison across Sales, Engineering, Operations, Procurement, Velocity, and manufacturer partners to maintain alignment on priorities and product decisions.
  • Support additional Velocity product strategy, technical evaluation, sales-enablement, market-development, and cross-functional initiatives as assigned; all responsibilities are handled in a satisfactory and timely manner.
